Job Description
FPS Maintenance Carpenter/ Utility
Under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance and Maintenance Manager performs a wide variety of skilled and semiskilled building maintenance and repair tasks; and performs related duties as required in the various Fitchburg Public Schools buildings.
The required duties may include painting carpentry masonry cement work roofing suspended ceiling vinyl and ceramic and related work. Maintenance/Utility workers may work independently under supervision as a craftsworker or as a leadworker with others to complete specific projects.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a valid Massachusetts Drivers License with a good driving record;
- The selected person must be capable of passing a standard CORI check;
- Must be able to pass a physical;
- Knowledge of: the materials tools methods and equipment used in various building trades such as carpentry plumbing painting masonry cement work tile electrical and plumbing work; repair methods and maintenance practices for structures furnishings and equipment; work safety practices;
- Ability to: Accurately prepare estimates of time materials and labor; work from plans and specifications; work with limited supervision; follow oral and written instructions; conductthemselves professionally while maintaining effective working relationships with others; provide supervision training and assistance to others as required;
- Three to five years of experience in a building trade such as carpentry painting masonry electrical; or past employment in positions which provided the required knowledge and abilities listed above.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs basic carpentry such as repairing structures installing cabinets partitions blackboards and shelves; repairs furniture and equipment; installs floor coverings acoustical ceilings and window glass;
- Repairs roofs floors doors locks all hardware and related items;
- Evaluates electrical problems and repairs faucets and other basic maintenancerelated tasks;
- Paints building interiors and exteriors furniture cement and other materials and items; pours and finishes concrete. Repairs or replaces VCT floor systems;
- Estimates for materials labor and time needed for projects; operates light automotive equipment to travel to facilities throughout the City of Fitchburg and surrounding cities and towns to gather andtransport materials furniture and equipment;
- Performs snow removal operations including operating snow plow road sander and snowblowers;
- Assists grounds crews custodial crews and delivery crews when needed;
- Responds to emergency callin situations;
- May be required to assist other department members as directed by Facilities Management;
- Performs all other related duties necessary to meet Facilities Management requirements.
