Lifeguard I/II Under immediate supervision regulates the use of a specific section of beach area; performs rescue work and renders first aid as necessary; and performs related duties as required.

The ideal candidate will have outstanding swimming and endurance skills the ability to react calmly in emergency situations some knowledge of first aid and the ability and willingness to perform rough water rescues in potentially hazardous surf conditions.

Harbor Department Lifeguards are scheduled to perform duties beginning with Memorial Day weekend (Saturday May 24 through Labor Day weekend (Monday September 1. Some personnel may work prior to and after the season to perform routine maintenance equipment inventory and recruitment activities.

APPROXIMATE SALARIES:
Lifeguard I: $25.34
Lifeguard II: $27.79

VETERANS POINTS: The Lifeguard I is a trainee/entry level classification and veterans points may apply to eligible applicants.Documentation of military service (DD214 must be submitted prior to the close of recruitment in order to receive points.

RECRUITMENT CLOSE:Friday April 11 2025
PERFORMANCE EXAM:Saturday April 19 2025 at 9:00am

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Determines surf conditions and advises public of unsafe conditions including inshore holes and ripcurrents;
  • Advises public of and enforces beach regulations in an assigned area;
  • Performs lifeguard services including performing rescue work and rendering first aid as required;
  • Operates and maintains lifesaving equipment and facilities in an assigned beach area;
  • Performs maintenance on lifesaving equipment and facilities;
  • May maintain and clean restrooms and empty beach trash barrels; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION TRAINING and EXPERIENCE

Lifeguard I: No experience required. Some beach lifeguard experience is desirable.

Lifeguard II: One season (or equivalent to 90 workdays) experience as a beach lifeguard.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years of age.
  • If under the age of 18 successful candidates must provide a valid work permit prior to being placed on the work schedule.
  • Possession of a valid California driver license while employed may be required for some positions.
  • Strong swimming skills.
  • Must attend and pass 40 hours of mandatory training provided the week of June 9 2025 June 13 2025 to maintain employment.
  • Must possess a current CPR certification for emergency responders. CPR certification training will be provided during mandatory training week of June 9 2025 June 13 2025.*
  • Must possess a certificate of completion for First Aid for the emergency responder 21 hour course). First Aid certification training will be provided during mandatory training week of June 9 2025 June 13 2025.*
  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
*Current certifications will be honored. CPR and First Aid certifications must be equivalent to the American Red Cross standards.

DESIRED
  • Maturity to act calmly and rationally in an emergency situation.
  • Effective oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of potentially hazardous weather/surf conditions.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring maximum physical exertion.
  • Emergency Medical Technician I certificate and/or lifeguard certificate.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS and ABILITIES

Working knowledge of lifesaving techniques first aid water safety and use of lifesaving equipment; beach/harbor regulations.

Working ability to:
  • Effectively determine safe and unsafe surfing and swimming conditions and effectively communicate such conditions to others;
  • Perform difficult rescues in rough surf;
  • Swim carry a rescued adult for considerable distance through rough surf;
  • Perform basic maintenance and cleaning of equipment facilities and restrooms; and
  • Deal tactfully and effectively with others including the representatives of other public agencies.

Applicants must provide sufficient information under the Education/Work experience portion of the application and supplemental questionnaire in order to determine eligibility. SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE qualifying: All applicants are required to complete and submit the questionnaire for this examination at the time of filing. The supplemental questionnaire may be used throughout the examination process to assist in determining qualifications and acceptability for the position. Failure to complete and submit the questionnaire may result in removal of the application from further consideration.

APPLICATION EVALUATION qualifying: All applications will be reviewed to determine whether or not the stated requirements are met. Those individuals meeting the stated requirements will be invited to continue to the next step in the examination process.

PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION Pass/Fail: Candidates will be required to complete several jobrelated tasks where essential job duties and the job environment are simulated.

The method of completing the tasks the time required and the final product will be scored and evaluated. Events may include but are not limited to a timed 1000meter swim in open oceanrough water and/or a timed 1200meter runswimrunswimrun. Candidates must pass the exam to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

***The Performance Exam has been scheduled for Saturday April 19 2025 at 9:00 am. Registration will be at 8:30 am. NO GOGGLES OR WETSUITS ALLOWED.***

Candidates must sign a waiver to participate in the performance examination. For candidates at least 16 years of age but under 18 years of age a parent or legal guardian MUSTbe present at the exam to show a photo ID and sign the waiver.

Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of six 6 months. The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill these positions only and is for Intermittent employment only. Incumbents are not eligible for benefits. It is anticipated there will be twenty 20 Intermittent vacancies.

If appointed at the lower level incumbents may be promoted to the higher levels without further examination upon meeting the minimum requirements demonstrating satisfactory performance and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

SELECTION INTERVIEWS: Candidates successfully completing the Performance Examination may be interviewed the same day.
