Summary


The Department of Human Resources
Central Employees Services Division (CESD) seeks anEmployee Health and Safety Graduate Intern to join theSafety unit where the number one priority is the health and safety of King County employees. This position is expected to beginsummer of 2025 and will continue through the 2025/2026 academic year. This is a great opportunity for currently enrolled graduate students who want to observe and participate in real world application of their current field of study. Interns must be enrolled in a Graduate (Masters) program inOccupational Health and Safety or Industrial Hygienefor the full duration of the internshipand may be asked to provide proof of enrollment at any time. Typically interns work parttime 1020 hours per week) during the academic term and may work fulltime 40 hours per week) during the summer and school breaks.

As theEmployee Health and Safety Graduate Internyou will have the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge and training in a realworld setting. Under supervision of the Safety Manager you will assist with the facilitation of the King Countys safety programs. You will learn about construction activities scheduling risk assessments planning and implement corrective measures as necessary. Our team of safety professionals works with departments divisions offices and leaders to provide a safe environment to all King County residents whether employees or members of the public doing business with King County. Our team promotes safe workplace practices ensures safety is effectively addressed in King County contracts conducts hazard assessments and partners with County colleagues to develop and implement safety programs.

Other Qualifications
  • Strong communication interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Intermediate level of technology proficiency using MS Office Productivity tools: Outlook Word Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities and produce quality detailed work within tight timeframes with strong time management skills.
  • Ability to successfully engage and work collaboratively with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds and at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience with SharePoint MS Teams and other collaborative online tools.

Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Washington State Labor and Industry safety regulations.
  • Understanding of Principles of Industrial Hygiene and/or Ergonomics.
  • Experience with database management and creating reports; monitoring and tracking analytical and statistical information.

Position Information:
  • Remote and Onsite Work Details:The Department of Human Resources has a hybrid workforce with employees working both onsite and from home. The work associated with this position is performed in a hybrid fashion includingfield work onsite office work and telework. Field work may require travel to various County maintenance facilities trades shops and construction sites located within greater King County.
  • Location Requirement:Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
  • Work Schedule:During the academic term the work week will consist of 1020 hours. During summer and other school breaks the work week may consist of 40 hours. This position is NonExempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and therefore is overtime eligible. Employees are paid on a biweekly schedule every other Thursday.
  • Union Representation: This position is not represented by a union.
