FullTime 10 Month Position**
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is a professional nursing position with the responsibility for providing services medical treatment and care to physically and multiply handicapped students in an elementary school(s) as assigned but does not require teaching skills in the performance of the duties. While the ability to exercise independent judgment is a requirement indirect supervision and instructions are received from the Principal and/or a Registered Professional Nurse and supervision may be exercised over a School Aide as assigned. Does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS: (Illustrative only)
Provides nursing treatment and instructions in the personal care of students with physical and multiple handicaps i.e. catherizations toilet training etc;
Instructs students in the proper use and care of braces wheelchairs walkers and other ambulatory aids and assists with their application and removal;
Administers first aid and emergency treatment to students and employees that have sustained minor cuts bruises lacerations etc. and accompanies them to the hospital whenever necessary;
Transports and assists with preparing physically and multiply handicapped students for physical occupational and speech therapy and other health related services;
Provides assistance to physically and multiply handicapped students in emergency situations effecting their health and safety;
Assists the Registered Professional Nurse with the maintenance of health records and reports;
May be required to disperse and secure prescribed students medications;
Assists RN with screenings and sports physicals;
Provides daily monitoring of student body and staff i.e.: flu fever etc;
Examines students for ringworm and lice;
Assists RN with monitoring asthmatics and diabetics on a daily basis.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of current nursing principles practices procedures and techniques;
Knowledge of medical terminology;
Ability to relate well with physically and multiply handicapped students;
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships;
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
Good judgment and powers of observation;
Tact; courtesy; dependability; neat appearance;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered School of Practical
Nursing and the demonstrated competence as a practitioner; AND Possession of a valid New York State registered Practical Nurses License at time of appointment.
