Overview

The Developmental and Behavioral Health team at Childrens Mercy helps children and teens with developmental psychiatric or psychological needs. We provide mental emotional and behavioral health services that lead to healthier children and stronger families.

What we do:

Assess for:

  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Autism
  • Eating Disorders
  • We have outpatient care for children with anorexia nervosa bulimia nervosa or other eating disorders.
  • Learning problems other than dyslexia
  • Tourette Syndrome
  • We have the only care center designed for children with Tourette Syndrome in the United States.

Psychological testing for concerns with:

  • Attention
  • Thinking reasoning and remembering
  • Emotions and behaviors
  • Social interactions
  • Guidance for families with children who have developmental delays or disabilities
  • Manage psychiatric medications for children with autism or developmental disabilities.
  • Therapy for children with chronic illnesses

The ideal candidate will be experienced in phone triage nursing and have superior communication skills. Keyboarding and computer skills are a must to dictate information from calls to the medical record. Registered nurses provide mental and developmental illness management and health promotion for patients and families who require care via phone. An ability to remain calm during stressful conversations is required. Registered nurses utilize nursing processes and knowledge of scientific principles to provide safe high quality comprehensive and age appropriate nursing care for patients. Registered staff nurses provide patient and family education and advocate for their needs. This position will be a phone position with very limited clinical care required. Knowledge of prior authorization and handling general provider and parent requests which are received via telephone or message center contact desired. Previous experience with triage: Critical thinking skills Ability to determine the issue or situation within the first few sentences of a conversation Superior verbal communication skills are essential Strong assessment skills Crisis intervention skills Teaching ability through telephone conversation as patients may require instruction for selfcare and/or symptom management.

New employees must be willing to be vaccinated if found nonimmune to measles mumps rubella (MMR) and chicken pox (varicella) and/or without evidence of tetanus diphtheria acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination since 2005. If you are selected for this position you will be asked to supply your immunization records as proof of vaccination. If you and have any concerns about receiving these vaccines medical and/or religious exemptions can be further discussed with Human Resources.

  • Meets the educational needs of the patient and family and advocates for their needs.
  • Maintains an environment that is safe comfortable efficient and familycentered.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence for practice to expand personal professional knowledge enhance role performance and improve nursing care quality.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree current employees hired before September 1 2013 are grandfathered and permitted to continue in the direct care nursing role.
    • No Experience necessary / OntheJob Training
  • Bachelors Degree Preferred for all direct care nurses hired after September 1 2013. Direct care nurses hired after this date without a BSN must complete their degree within 5 years of their hire date.
    • No Experience necessary / OntheJob Training
  • One of the following: Licensed RN Kansas Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas required upon hire
  • One of the following: Licensed RN MO Registered Nurse Multistate License Missouri required upon hire
  • RN Compact license for all states besides KS and MO KS or MO Compact required within 60 days of hire
