Job Description

Bethel School Districtis seeking qualified applicantsfor an 8 hour per day Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant. This position will work in multiple school settings throughout the district.

Nature of Work

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) assists in the implementation of intervention services under the guidance of a licensed occupational therapist. The occupational therapy assistant works with students identified with having disabilities that interfere with their ability to fully participate in their educational programs including daily life activities and other school occupations.

The COTA works under the guidance of the Occupational Therapist (OT). Using the OTs evaluation results and under their direction the COTA plans and carries out activities and interventions to meet student/child needs. The COTA consults with the OT and other departmental staff regarding student progress care and maintenance of equipment and supplies. The OT defines the level of guidance required in the work environment according to state licensing board standards

Examples of Work

These duties are illustrative only. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Supports and assists the OTs evaluation of students abilities through a variety of functional behavioral and standardized assessments observations data collection checklists and interviews with family student and educational personnel.
  • Contributes to the development of individualized occupational therapy (OT) intervention plans.
  • Participates in planning and program development with the instructional team.
  • Based on the intervention plan selects and implements therapeutic interventions to enhance student performance.
  • Based on the intervention plan adapts the process and modifies the environment including equipment and materials.
  • Explains intervention techniques to student and educational personnel.
  • Continuously monitors student progress the effects of intervention techniques and the need for continuation modification or removal of services and communicates this information to the OT.
  • Documents OT intervention services and maintains administrative records in accordance with state guidelines and school policy.
  • Contributes information to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Maintains inventory of therapeutic equipment and projects needs for budget planning.
  • Manages time well and performs other duties as assigned.

Selection Factors

  • Knowledge of educational programs offered in all schools and of basic educational techniques as required by the position
  • Knowledge of the basic developmental stages of a childs learning process
  • Ability to select adapt and sequence relative strategies and purposeful activities that support intervention goals
  • Ability to schedule the workload and meet the needs of the program
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to interact positively with children and adults and observe individual student abilities
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision
  • Ability to operate standard office and audiovisual equipment safely and proficiently as required by the position
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate and legal level of confidentiality regarding students staff and other individuals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers students administrators parents and coworkers.
  • Ability to maintain regular predictable and prompt attendance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Successful completion of an associates degree in an Occupation Therapy Assistant Program
  • Meet state license/certification requirements.

Upon offer of employment applicants must obtain a fingerprint clearance from the Oregon Department of Education through a process authorized by the Bethel School District. Applicants would be responsible for the onetime fingerprint clearance fee.
