Job Summary
Performs a wide variety of radiographic examinations and related procedures to produce quality images/films for use in diagnostic evaluations. Prepares patients for exams using general and specialized radiographic/fluoroscopic equipment camera potables carms and other ancillary equipment. Complies with all radiation and other safety related rules and regulations and participates with physicians in the more complex procedures involving insertions of catheters and/or administration of contrast media. Assists in the Emergency Department on the evening afternoon and weekend shifts.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Performs a variety of duties related to radiologic examinations.
Performs radiographic exams. Receives orders for designated radiologic examinations and prepares room; checking to assure that all required equipment supplies are on hand. As required transports patients on stretchers or wheelchair to and from examining rooms and other areas.
Positions patients on table or in appropriate standing/sitting posture. Required to lift move position and stabilize totally incapacitated patients. Arranges attaches and/or adjusts immobilization or supportive devices such as sandbags pillows binders and related appliances.
Checks and adjusts for proper voltage amperage duration of exposure etc.; making any required computations and calibrations. Activates machinery and takes required number of exposures. Repositions patient between exposure. Radiographs all body areas such as head chest spine abdomen extremities etc.
Processes films using automated equipment. Transports portable equipment to inpatient units or Operating Room and takes required exposures at bedside.
Assists radiologist and/or other technologists to extent of capabilities in carrying out the more complex special examinations such as angiograms bronchiograms biopsies etc. Assists in administration of opaque media orally by injection by enema etc.; preparation of sterile trays special timing of medications and/or filming precise position of patient and equipment to capture remote or difficult to obtain highlights sue of special ancillary equipment etc. Assist with procedures involving insertion of pacemakers SwanGanz catheters etc.
Determines by prescribed criteria type of contrast media to be used for patients.
Maintains radiation safety.
Maintains radiation exposure levels to minimize patient dose. Adjusts xray equipment for proper centering angle of exposure to designated body area. Arrange shielding devices.
Stands behind protective barrier or wears lead apron to meet Alara requirements. Protect visitor and general public from unnecessary radiation exposures.
Maintains communication.
Explains procedures to be performed to each patient. Gives preparatory instructions. Provides reassurance to anxious patients. Reads reports to authorized staff over phones. Answers inquiries and provides requested assistance on matters dealing with Ultrasound CT Scan Nuclear Medicine and MRI services. Maintains high level of quality control.
Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition. When using portable equipment in Operating Room during surgical procedures follows all regulations/procedures dealing with sterile techniques and related matters.
Maintains sterile techniques when preparing contrast media for injection and sterile trays for complex procedures.
Carries out prescribed preventative maintenance procedures on instruments/equipment; making minor adjustments or repairs. Refers defective or inoperable equipment for repairs/replacement. Provides a high level of customer service.
Occasionally deals with uncooperative patients and/or distraught family members. Observes patients condition and brings any unusual circumstances to attention of supervisor.
Initiates emergency procedures within authorized limits as required.
Is available for callin or other emergency duties.
Exercises charge responsibility as required.
Assumes charge responsibility for section as required. Provides direction and assistance to technologists and support staff as required. Distributes work assignments and room assignments. As needed calls in extra staff to deal with emergencies or other contingencies. Assists in arranging coverage for next shift as required.
Reviews film for quality and readability and takes steps required to assure that quality control standards are met. Copies needed clinical forms and attaches to films for Radiologist.
Provides proper record keeping and required documentation.
Completes all required forms records and reports concerning number and type of procedures performed. Maintains updated working knowledge of departmental filing and record keeping systems.
Attaches identifying information to films. Copies and packages films for referral to outside hospitals.
In absence of clerical staff performs a variety of department clerical and related tasks.
Completes STAT reports and delivers to proper personnel.
Performs related duties.
Attends 66 of staff meetings.
Attends inservices.
Acknowledges all tests to generate patient charges on a daily basis.
Assists clerical support staff with patient schedules recording keeping and related tasks. Assists in assuring that adequate supplies and equipment are on hand when needed.
Qualifications:
Educational / Minimum Requirements:
High School and 2 years accredited program in Radiologic Technology.
State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:
Radiologic Technologist registered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and licensed in the state of Connecticut. Advanced certification in CT or Mammography is highly recommended.
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Healthcare Provider CPR from American Heart Association or Professional Rescuer CPR by American Red Cross or other similar programs deemed appropriate by management. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.

Physical Requirements:
On feet most of the day with lifting greater than 50 lbs. occasionally and routinely up to 35 lbs. daily. Physical agility including but limited to: bending stooping walking reaching standing pulling pushing and twisting. Hearing and sight corrected to normal. Ability to verbalize so the average person can comprehend. Manipulate radiology equipment and access patients response to procedure.
Work Environment:
Radiation exposure; patient element chemical fume exposure; frequent changes in lighting levels room temperature varies.
Cognitive Requirements:
Excellent oral communication skills literate in English excellent reading and mathematical skills ability to read comprehend and execute written and oral instructions good organizational and decision making skills and good writing skills.
