REPORTS TO: Nurse Leader Principal or Superintendent DirectorPOSITION SUMMARY: The School Nurse ensures the health and wellbeing of students by providing skilled nursing care maintaining accurate health records and supporting infection control efforts. The School Nurse serves as a liaison between students staff parents and healthcare providers addressing medical concerns and developing action plans for students with special health needs including 504 plans and IEPs. The School Nurse manages medication administration maintains health supplies and ensures compliance with immunization and public health regulations. Additionally the School Nurse upholds confidentiality communicates medical issues to staff as needed and collaborates with school physicians and public health agencies to promote a safe and healthy school environment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:Adheres to the Nursing Standards of Conduct set by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Performs skilled nursing procedures in a safe competent and effective manner.Supports and promotes students physical and emotional wellbeing.Serves as a liaison and resource for students and staff on healthrelated matters. Communicates relevant student medical concerns to teachers and staff as needed.Maintains accurate and uptodate student health and immunization records. Verifies and ensures medication orders are on record for all prescription medications. Ensures parental consent is on file for both prescription and overthecounter medications. Maintains a detailed log of all administered prescription and overthecounter medications.Manages health cabinets ensuring proper storage safe handling and disposal of medical supplies prescription medications and hazardous wastes. Communicates with students doctors and healthcare providers regarding student medical needs. Develops and implements action plans for students with special health needs including section 504 plans or Individual Education Programs (IEP) as applicable. Presents nursing assessments guidelines and recommendations in team staff and school committee meetings as necessary. Documents nursing assessments interventions and evaluations in students medical records. Works with the Massachusetts Immunization and Epidemiology Programs to ensure infection control and compliance with immunization requirements. Supports communicable disease prevention through immunization monitoring early detection surveillance and reporting. Maintains privacy and confidentiality of student and staff health information in accordance with state and federal laws.Notifies parents of student illness or injury during school hours and completes necessary accident reports. Consults regularly with school physicians regarding student health concerns. Performs any other duties as assigned by the Superintendent and/or their designee.QUALIFICATIONS: Strong understanding of school nursing practices public health and pediatric care with a commitment to continuous learning and application of new skills.Proficient in performing skilled nursing procedures administering medications and managing emergency health situations.Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively collaborate with students parents staff and healthcare professionals. Contributes to a positive school environment.Proactively seeks ways to support and assist students staff and families.Maintains privacy and confidentiality of student and staff health information in accordance with HIPAA and other state and federal regulations.Ability to assess health concerns analyze situations and implement effective solutions. Demonstrates empathy patience and a commitment to student wellbeing. Must be authorized to work in the United States.EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:Massachusetts Registered Nursing License required.Bachelors degree in Nursing.Department of Education Licensure as a School Nurse or possess criteria to become licensed.Minimum two 2 years fulltime nursing experience experience in school health family practice community health or pediatrics preferred. CPR and AED certification required.
