1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Must be at least 18 years of age.
3. Successful completion of an accredited Pharmacy technician training program is highly desirable or completed 500 hours of employment as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee.
4. Must be a registered Pharmacy Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy or a registered Pharmacy Intern with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
5. Must be a Board Certified Pharmacy Technician from a nationally approved technician certification board within one year of employment.
6. Must maintain the title Certified Pharmacy Technician with a nationally recognized certificate from an accredited certifying organization or be a registered Pharmacy Intern with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy. Effective January 2013.
7. Must complete annual Continuing Education credits as required by the certifying body to maintain Certification.
8. Familiarity with medical terminology abbreviations and computer technology is required.
9. Must complete annual BWH Pharmacy Technician Competency Assessment Exam.
10. Upon departmental orientation and annually thereafter must complete annual mandatory training which includes:
a. Safety Training
OSHA/Fire Safety
Infection control
Safe handling of chemotherapeutic agents
b. Annual Competency Assessments
Automated Dispensing Machines
Laws and Regulations
Dosage calculations
Identification of dosages routes and storage requirements
1. Command of the English language.
2. Ability to work with sustained attention and care on routine repetitive tasks.
3. Must be able to work accurately under stress with time constraints.
4. Above average communication skills and knowledge of Pharmacy policies and procedures is essential.
5. Ability to perform in a professional and courteous manner and maintain working relationships with Physicians Nurses Pharmacists and other health care professionals.
6. Time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks under time constraints.
7. Ability to organize and maintain efficient work areas and services.
8. Ability to make decisions based on knowledge of procedural requirements in conjunction with specific skills and task related functions.
9. Ability to distinguish routine functions from those requiring a Pharmacists professional judgment.
10. Ability to spend most of the work time standing or walking in order to complete daily tasks.
11. Ability to lift heavy loads sometimes required setting up and filling medication supply orders.
12. Ability to acquire skills necessary in operation of Pharmacy equipment.

15. Ability to perform the common mathematical calculations associated with preparing nonsterile extemporaneously manufactured pharmaceutical products.

Under the direction of a Staff Pharmacist and/or Certified Technician Specialist follows established policies and procedures to perform a variety of routine technical and clerical support tasks that are integral to the operation of the Pharmacy department. Tasks include preparation of unit dose medications outpatient prescriptions intravenous admixtures stock orders control substances and investigational drug services.
These tasks are designed to assist the Pharmacist in the preparation and delivery of pharmaceutical supplies and medications in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Board of Registration in Pharmacy Department of Public Health and other regulatory agency as applicable. Most tasks require the review and authorization of a licensed Pharmacist.
1. Perform all required pharmaceutical dosage calculations necessary to prepare nonsterile extemporaneous dosage forms under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
7. Receive check and store pharmaceutical supplies and medications that have been ordered from pharmaceutical manufacturers and drug wholesalers when directed.
