Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains a sterile environment as prescribed by Hospital policy and AORN Standards of Care and adheres to blood/body fluid policies and procedures utilizing OSHA Standards.
- Functions under all aspects of surgical techniques both routine and special surgical procedures and applies them in a professional manner.
- Functions under the direction of the Surgeon and the Registered Nurse to meet all aspects of patient care and safety
- Ensures proper instrumentation equipment in accordance with department protocol and surgeons preference cards.
- Provides a safe and efficient environment for the patient.
- Respects patients inherent rights to privacy dignity and safety.
- Differentiates sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments necessary for specific surgical procedures.
- Prepares and understands the specific use of all supplies and equipment used for surgical procedures.
- Assumes responsibility for orientation of new Operating Room employees as required.
- Assists in the preparation/labeling of medications on the sterile field during the surgical procedure under the direction of the Surgeon and Registered Nurse according to Pharmacy and Standards of care.
- Understands the importance of teamwork consideration and cooperation. Understands the need to be actively involved in universal Protocol and Hard Time Out
- Understands the function of a first assist.
- Understands and assists with patient positioning devices/equipment ensures proper patients positioning safety.
- Works in conjunction with the Registered Nurse and CSR Tech. to update and maintain equipment and instrumentation of specialty services.
- Participates in unit staff meetings inservice programs and educational programs relative to career development. Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested by his/her immediate supervisor.
- Assists patients with ADLs.
- Demonstrates proficiency with the taking of vital signs treatments procedures and equipment as demonstrated by the skills checklist.
- Weighs lifts moves positions and transports patients as appropriate.
- Reports/documents interventions and the patients response to the appropriate nurse.
- Communicates changes in patient condition in a timely manner.
- Promptly answers patient lights/responds to alarms
- Maintains adequate stock of supplies in each patient room.
- Maintains par levels of the clean supply and medication rooms reorders items as needed keeps an accurate list of supplies restocks shelves and maintains a clean environment. As assigned monitors inventories and replaces materials as needed
- Demonstrates the ability to recognize and deal with emergencies.
- Completes identification and allergy bracelets on patients as needed.
- Assists in chart form completion/ adds forms to all records as needed .i.e. doctors orders progress notes).
- Exchanges needle boxes replaces gloves in all areas and participates in maintaining a clean clutterfree environment.
- Assists in arrangements for patient transports at the request of the nurse in charge.
- Demonstrates competency in the following areas by physical demonstration or written exam: Equipment Age Specific V/S Assessment Blood Glucose monitoring EKG procedure venipuncture urine testing and handling of other specimens that may be required.
- Reviews attends and signs all inservice updates.
- Actively participates in own performance appraisal.
- In the Emergency Department gathers patient data relative to presenting complaint vital signs past medical history allergies tetanus status etc.
- Performs scheduled and as needed cleaning of medical equipment.
Essential Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required for the Position
Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of current standards of practice required.
- Maintains skill level competency and certification on an ongoing basis.
Skills:
- Must be able to demonstrate adequate technical skills and judgment to function unsupervised during oncall second shift and weekend hours.
- Must be able to function in CSR to cover needs. Ensures proper preparation of instruments and equipment.
Ability to:
- Ability to tactfully communicate with both internal and external customers.
- Ability to handle stress and work in emergency situations.
- Ability to assist patients on and off equipment.
- Ability to move quickly in the event of an emergency.
- Ability to stand and walk approximately ninety percent 90 of shift with frequent climbing
bending reaching stooping squatting and helping to lift objects and/or patients ranging from five
5 to three hundred 300 or more pounds.
- Ability to use of fingers and hands to operate all departmentrelated equipment as described on the Department checklist. Additionally must use telephone calculator fax and other related office equipment.
- Utilize face shields/mask gloves protective clothing safety glasses and other protection associated with the care of patients.
Credentials and Experience Required
- Graduate of an Accredited Civilian or Military Operating Room Technician Program.
- Three years of related experience.
- Certified Operating Room Technician
- EMT or equivalent preferred
Special Requirements
- Available to work day evening and/or night shift as well as rotation on weekends as assigned. Able to rotate to units as assigned.
- Able to fill call expectations
- Willing to work additional shifts as assigned.
- Available to stay overnight should need arise during patient transports off island.
- May be exposed to the following hazards: temperature fluctuations moderate noise levels minimal dust infectious diseases and other chemicals as customarily used in a hospital setting. Exposure to various hazards in handling patient transports.
- Available to work overtime as needed to complete all job duties.
- Must be available to work in the case of a Hospital declared emergency.
Job Summary:
Provides technical expertise within the sterile environment in assisting/supporting the members of the Surgical Team to provide quality patient care. Further demonstrates a good technical knowledge of the surgical environment and utilizes this knowledge in assisting the Registered Nurse to provide surgical environment which supports quality patient care. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse performs a variety of duties related to the care and treatment of patients.
