GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT
Working under the general direction of the Oncology Pharmacy Manager and Oncology Clinical Pharmacists the Pharmacy Technician follows established policies and procedures to perform a variety of technical and clerical support tasks that are integral to the operation of the oncology pharmacy department at Mass General West. All technicians are responsible for answering phones attending staff meetings providing support to the pharmacists checking expiration dates on medications and assisting in other areas as needed.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
An Outpatient Oncology Pharmacy Technician prepares all intravenous admixture (IV) medications for patients being treated in the center. He or she inventories and orders IV admixture supplies; empties yellow buckets; prepares boxes for disposal of contaminated equipment; cleans and maintains work area and equipment; restocks supplies medications diluents syringes and needles. Delivers prepared IVs to the infusion room(s).Jobspecific Responsibilities: Answers telephone. Sets up home infusion pumps. Sets up bins for mixing with proper medication bag tubing and filter requirements. Prepares IV chemotherapy investigational and other medications using aseptic technique. Adheres to safety requirements in the handling and preparation of chemotherapy and other hazardous agents according to current guidelines (USP 797 USP 800 ASHP NIOSH). Conducts daily and monthly cleaning of hoods. Orders receives and restocks inventory. Checks expiration dates and rotates medications syringes IV bags and other products. Properly disposes of waste products. Performs quality control checks. Assists pharmacist at dispensing window with properly bagging and tubing of medications or notifying nurses for pickup. Delivers medications as needed. Receives packages and returned items.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Fluency in English. Math skills including addition subtraction multiplication division ratios/proportions. Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Attention to detail and organizational ability. Good prioritization skills. Effective problem solving skills. Ability to work under pressure. Ability to meet deadlines. Computer literacy. LICENSES CERTIFICATIONS and/or REGISTRATIONS:
Current Massachusetts Pharmacy Technician License required National Certification (CPhT) from Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required
EDUCATION:
High School diploma or GED required
EXPERIENCE:
12 years experience in intravenous admixture and aseptic technique preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Standing walking able to lift 25 pounds Able to stand or sit for extended periods of time
