Education/Degree

RHIT RHIA or CCS with demonstrated coding skills.

Extensive recent coding experience of at least 2 recent years may be substituted for formal education and/or certification.
Skills
Required:
Understanding of the healthcare field and the applicable prospective payment systems and their relationship to the position.
Indepth understanding of health and medical record information.
Understanding of A & P medical terminology and record documentation.
Must be familiar with the principles and practices of Health Information/Medical Records Sciences and understand how they apply to hospitals medical records and coding in particular.
Must possess a knowledge and understanding of the ICD CM LTC and/or IRF coding contingent on the work setting.
Must have some familiarity with CPT coding and levels.
Computer proficiency required. Microsoft office applications preferred with ability to learn new software.

Summary
Complete inpatient and outpatient record coding in an accurate and timely manner as defined in the Department and in keeping with Coding Guidelines and other applicable coding rules and conventions applicable to the facility.
Key Responsibilities
Discharged patient records are coded in adherence with ICDCM rules department policies and procedures and standardized coding rules conventions and IRF/LTCH requirements.
Records are coded to meet established HIM timeframes.
Admission Records are coded in accordance with IRF/LTCH rules and standards.
OPD records are coded in adherence with Ambulatory coding conventions.
Impairment coding is provided as needed to support department needs.
Peer review is actively participated in to ensure coding accuracy.
Cross coverage is provided to support HIM team meet department objectives.
Appropriate codes are assigned and entered into the computer system at the respective hospital for the UB92
Appropriate codes are assigned and entered into the IRFPAI for transmission to the CMS via UDS or eRehab.
Additional department organization or network activities are completed per established objectives.
