GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Undergraduate/Coop Laboratory Technician as training support staff of the CCI (Center for Clinical Investigation) protocol studies. The Undergraduate/Coop Laboratory Technician will be working independently under the general supervision of the Brigham Research Assay Core (BRAC) Lab Manager and directly under supervision of the CCI Specimen Processing Lab Supervisor and in accordance with established procedures and policies assists with the handling and processing of all specimens. This includes compliance with research protocol instructions while maintaining lab services and procedures within standard guidelines. Assist with the timely flow of specimens through the specimen processing area understanding the importance of the specimens being processed. Performs various duties associated with the maintenance of quality service parameters for the processing area including but not restricted to general record and documentation maintenance. Uses waived instrumentation for simple chemistries.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working within a team structure under the direction of the BRAC Lab Manager and CCI Specimen Processing Lab Supervisor to insure an efficient and high quality specimenprocessing environment while providing customer oriented services.
Collects and/or centrifuges and/or separates and aliquots specimens according to established procedures. Makes sure that specimens are handled in the order of established priority.
Labels specimen collection and storage containers. Completes all documentation required for individual specimens according to research protocol requirements and within the guidelines and policies of the BRAC Laboratories.
Responsible for uploading patient samples information into database system.
Perform routine specimen analysis using waived instrumentation. Maintains same laboratory instrumentation to performance standards.
Responsible for helping to maintain an adequate inventory of supplies used by the CCI Specimen Processing Lab. Maintain proper storage of reagents and supplies and maintaining all appropriate records.
Responsible for uploading patients samples information into database system.
Maintains established department policies procedures objectives quality assurance safety environmental and infection controls.
Performs all other duties/responsibilities as directed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School graduate with college credits required.
College undergraduate required. Prefer individuals with science or patient care background and interest in scientific research.

Must be extremely organized and capable of working under pressure.
Ability to identify potential or ongoing problems and help develop solutions to such problems.
Must have the ability to work independently under general supervision.
Must possess initiative.
Must possess good interpersonal skills to interact courteously and effectively with coworkers research investigators other hospital personnel and external contacts.
Must have basic computer experience.
Must be able to read write and speak fluent English.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Normal specimen laboratory and outpatient environments
May have exposure to infectious materials and hazardous substances exposure to odors exposure to noise under controlled conditions
Possible visual strain and hand strain encountered while performing specimenprocessing duties or while using computer terminals.
Work requires frequent standing walking and occasional lifting or carrying of supplies.
