GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under general supervision of Principal Investigator and in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures conducts experiments to identify new therapeutic strategies in pediatric and adult cancers (previous studies by the lab have led to FDA approval of three new for cancer). This research assistant position is cell culture intensive and uses viability protein (immunoblotting) and flow cytometry analytic techniques to evaluate tumor cell cultures after treatment with novel therapies. The position also includes responsibility (along with other lab members) for genome sequencing and other highthroughput analytics to identify therapeuticallyrelevant biologic vulnerabilities in cancer. These studies are coupled with functional validations (gene knockdowns and overexpression) to confirm and understand the therapeutic opportunities. Ideally the research assistant will look forward to preparing manuscripts for publication in highimpact science and medicine journals so strong writing ability is a plus. The research assistant will also assist in the training of new students and postdoctoral fellows in standard methods of molecular biology and cell culture. Perfect opportunity for someone planning to attend medical or graduate school in 23 years!
This laboratory is primarily interested in the biology and therapeutics of cancer.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Contributes to genomic and proteomic screens to identify novel therapeutic targets in human cancer. Performs tumor cell cultures and evaluates effects of treating tumor cultures with novel therapies. Carries out standard methods of molecular biology including: Isolation of various cell fractions from blood bone marrow and solid tumor specimens; immunoprecipitation and western blotting Polymerase chain reaction DNA and cDNA amplification; DNA cloning in phage and plasmids; nextgeneration sequencing; fluorescence in situ hybridization;
2. Records data summarizes and analyzes results using basic statistics.
3. Reports on progress of work at weekly laboratory seminars.
4. Prepares laboratory reagents chemicals instruments and equipment.
5. Maintains supplies inventory in accordance with department procedures.
6. Functions as a key team member in drafting and otherwise preparing highimpact publications.
7. Helps train new students and postdoctoral fellows in standard methods of molecular biology.
8. Maintains established departmental policies procedures and objectives including the areas of quality assurance safety environmental affairs and infection control.
9. Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.
