GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT
The Microbiology Lab Supervisor reports directly to the Technical Director. Under the general direction of the Technical Director and Laboratory Directors the incumbents responsibilities will encompass all the daily operations of all lab areas (e.g. Bacteriology Blood cultures Antibiotic Susceptibility Mycology Mycobacteriology Molecular Microbiology Parasitology Serology Specimen Receiving and Virology) of the Microbiology Lab including supervision of laboratory staff.
It is expected that incumbent will develop and maintain a working knowledgeand expertiseof laboratory operations and procedures.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Regulatory/Compliance/Quality Management:
Manage quality assurance activities and safety reporting system to ensure high level of performance and ensures corrections are made when any result deviates from the laboratorys established performance specifications. Ensures that all records and reports are prepared and utilized according to established policy.
Oversees quality control activities in areas assigned by the Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s). With an overall awareness and understanding of quality control activities in all laboratory areas.
Assigns monitors and supervises work to ensure compliance with departmental standard operating procedures and all applicable federal state and accreditation agency laws regulations standards and policies including health and safety regulations as well as patient confidentiality.
Investigates and provides follow up for Safety Reports as requested.
Responsible for all CAP and nonCAP proficiency testing in areas assigned by the Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s). . Assures that tests are completed proficiency test results are submitted in a timely manner results are evaluated and all remedial actions are completed and documented.
Evaluates the laboratorys regulatory compliance and works with leadership to implement remediation. Prepares the laboratory for all regulatory reviews.
Responsible for ensuring all laboratory staff complete mandatory training.
Ensures compliance with all relevant safety and infection control polices (external agencies hospital department lab)
Human Resources Management
Conducts interviews and identifies candidates for hiring working with Pathology HR recruiter. Works with Technical Directors and/or Laboratory Director(s) as applicable to hiring decisions that best fit laboratory staffing and technical needs.
Ensures effective department orientation training and ongoing competency assessments for all new employees and existing staff.
May prepare and coordinate weekly work schedule for all lab areas on all shifts (day evening & night) including weekends and holidays. Coordinates schedule adjustments required to compensate for sick calls changing workload and other operational issues in order to provide adequate staffing coverage in all lab areas. May be responsible for managing employee vacation requests
Reviews and manages labwide staffing workflow and workload distribution to maintain service levels.
Prepares and conducts performance evaluations of laboratory staff including use of PeopleSoft to complete HR processes as requested or applicable. Ensures employee performance evaluations are completed in a timely fashion.
Investigates and conducts performance issues in conjunction with the Technical Director Laboratory Director(s) and Pathology HR Business Partner as requested or applicable. Implements corrective action in consultation with Technical Director.
Responds to employee questions and concerns identifies possible solutions and escalates as needed.
Training/Staff Development
Develops and coordinates labwide crosstraining plan. Develops and assists with implementation of lab area specific training curriculum and strategies in conjunction with technical specialists.
Oversees and monitors the training of personnel in policy technical methods and theory. Monitors performance and evaluates readiness of newly hired personnel and current personnel. Ensures that all personnel are adequately trained and that they maintain their competency in those lab areas in which they are trained.
Oversees laboratorys competency program. Develops and implements internal competencies for all staff and maintains documentation of same. Monitors and oversees Pathologys competency tracking database.
Oversees health and safety education activities in conjunction with Health & Safety Officer Technical Director and Laboratory Directors. Recommends appropriate policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Responds to and promptly resolves all unsafe conditions.
Assists in developing and maintaining laboratorys continuing education program.
May coordinate and schedules teaching activities of Medical Students Residents and Fellows and other members of the staff as requested by the Technical Director and Laboratory Director(s).
Assists with LIS testing/training and development. Performs minor maintenance on computer workstations as necessary; troubleshoots minor software and hardware malfunctions; notifies IS Help Desk of major malfunctions or problems.
Leadership/Lab Operations
Provides input to Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s) and hospital administration for performance improvement or strategic initiatives.
Assists with analysis development preparation and monitoring of laboratory budget.
Manages the implementation of new tests methods and technology according to departmental policies as assigned by Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s).
Responsible for the reviewing and editing the final draft of new procedures and updates to existing procedures prior to submission to Laboratory Directors for their review and approval. Ensures that procedure manuals are reviewed and approved by the Lab Director annually. Communicates procedural changes to laboratory staff.
Provides onsite support during internal or external emergencies as requested by hospital or department leadership.
Prepares data for budgets quality/performance improvement projects. Manages special projects assigned by the Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s).
Responds to test inquiries concerning normal values billing and other procedural changes. Oversees compliance/billing corrections. Implements new compliance/billing policy and procedures as needed.
Maintains close liaison and cooperation with other hospital laboratories and hospital staff to provide coordination of activities that affect patient care. Functions as resource person for medical and nursing staff in regard to questions about diagnostic testing in the Microbiology Laboratory.
May conduct staff meetings.
Attends regular monthly departmental meetings and serves on committees as directed by the Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s). Attends educational seminars and conferences to remain current with technological advancements and trends.
Performs limited bench work less than 20 of time when there is an extreme staffing shortage or as part of internal/external disaster response.
Functions as Technical Director at times when Technical Director is not available.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Technical
  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills
  • Ability to effectively evaluate patient results and identify technical or clinical issues.
  • Demonstrated detailed working knowledge of safety policies and technical procedures specific to the lab.
  • Demonstrated detailed knowledge of relevant regulatory standards including JC OSHA and specialty agencies.
Leadership
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge and understanding of MGH Administration and HR policies principles and practice
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interview and train new employees.
  • Ability to lead others provide guidance instruction and foster teamwork and cooperation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of hospital administrative and HR policies to ensure compliance.

Certifications:
Required:
Active national general certification (ASCP or equivalent) or categorical certification in a relevant specialty
Education:
BS or BA in Science from an accredited college required. BS in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 6 years of progressively more responsible experience with a minimum 1 year in a supervisory role. Demonstrated knowledge specific to the Microbiology.
