Overview
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner will have a multifaceted role caring for patients in several locations within MGH including the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) the delivery room and the Special Care Nursery.
The NP practice in the NICU will be in collaboration with an attending physician. Responsibilities include but are not limited to direct patient care for an assigned group of patients participation in daily rounds writing daily notes orders and discharge summaries performing procedures appropriate for NICU scope of practice and managing family meetings. This work will require collaboration with the attending physician residents and fellows nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes and family centered care. Additionally the NP will be able to provide clinical consultation on newborns and infants in other areas of the hospital upon request.
The NP will work collaboratively with NICU attending physician backup. Delivery room coverage/triage services responsibility includes attending high risk deliveries providing neonatal resuscitation evaluating newborns in the delivery room and newborn nurseries. The DR NNP will provide all necessary inhouse and outpatient neonatology consultations requested by obstetric staff. DR NNP will provide necessary support and consultation for primary care pediatricians in newborn nurseries upon request. They will be responsible for admission and first day inhospital care for all Level II admissions. In collaboration with obstetric nursing and NICU medical staff the DR NNP will provide direct management of patient flow within the newborn medicine service and will determine bed availability and admission destination.
The current position includes predominantly coverage of night weekend and holiday shifts.
Expectations
1. Manage the health care of patients across Newborn Services through advanced health assessment diagnosis intervention and evaluation in a collaborative practice with a physician. Develops treatment plans treats patients with acute problems including illnesses and minor injuries following a predetermined protocol in a collaborative practice with a physician.
2. Coordinate the care of select patient populations to ensure promotion of health and wellness through education of patients and families coordination or services and referrals.
3. Coordinate patient transfers and admissions within the Newborn Service.
4. Participate in professional development and lifelong learning including participation in resident medical education and training. Participate in continuing education quality improvement initiatives clinical outcome evaluation and monitoring as well as medical and nursing research.
Qualifications
1. Advanced Nurse Practitioner degree required;
2. Professional licensure in Massachusetts; and
3. Minimum of two 2 years of NNP experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is desirable.

1. Maintains competency in procedures necessary to care for neonates including intubation surfactant administration ventilator management needle thoracostomy chest tube placement umbilical line placement PIV insertion and arterial line placement;

4. Able to work in a fastpaced environment;
5. Self motivated; and
6. Adheres to annual training requirements.
