Job Description

High School Diploma or equivalent required

Bachelor Degree strongly preferred

*The ideal candidate will be a college graduate or currently enrolled in college pursuing a degree in nursing science or other allied health field.

Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills and interpersonal skills. This position requires a great deal of initial contact with patients.

Proficient in all MA technical skills.

Must possess a solid understanding of ambulatory patient care to ensure smooth patient flow be organized and multitasking and have excellent learning skills.

Ability to prioritize in a very busy atmosphere.

Computer Literacy/Data Entry Skills.

Familiarity in a healthcare setting.

Ability to problemsolve. Capable to work quickly to resolve or minimize identified problems.

Ability and willingness to train and precept other MAs in competencies.

Ability to work successfully as a team player.

Good organizational skills are required to prioritize tasks effectively.

Must maintain annual competencies related to practice protocol.

Must attend mandatory department meetings and annual inservices.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: List the number of FTEs supervised.

Responsible for training of new staff and taking lead role for other staff.

Responsible for coordinating MA coverage with Practice Manager to ensure smooth patient flow.

Works closely with Practice Manager on staffing coverage.

The Brigham and Womens/Mass General Health Care Center is a comprehensive communitybased multispecialty ambulatory care center located in Patriots Place a lifestyle center located in Fox borough Massachusetts. The Health Care Center offers a wide range of ambulatory services including Day Surgery Primary Care Urgent Care Medical and Surgical specialties as well as Pharmacy and a comprehensive offering of laboratory and diagnostic imaging.

Although the Health Care Center is located 35 miles from the main campus of BWH the services offered comply with the standards of care found at our main campus. In addition all physicians practicing at the Center is fully credentialed at BWH and will provide the same excellence of care that helped make the BWH nationally recognized for clinical excellence. In keeping with this the staff of the Health Care Center will be BWH employees and will demonstrate the same high level of competence and professionalism found at the main campus.

The mission of the Health Care Center is to provide comprehensive multispecialty integrated high quality patient oriented fiscally sound patient care and services in a safe and supportive environment.

Each employee is responsible for embracing this mission and implementing the vision of creating an environment that provides advanced and collaborative patient and familycentered care.

As part of the Health Care team all employees must be committed to facilitating operational efficiency expedient and safe patient care through multidisciplinary cross coverage duties as needed throughout the Health Care Center. The ability to work effectively in a team environment is the key to our success and is considered to be a core competency required by all staff members.

In addition all employees will demonstrate a high level of customer service skills and professionalism. The ideal employee will demonstrate flexibility and willingness to participate in changes to improve operational efficiency and expedient highquality patient care.

The Medical Assistant functions as a member of the clinical team under the supervision of the management physician and nursing staff.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility major job duties special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

Accurately performs all functions necessary in the urgent care setting excluding procedures that require a nursing license i.e. the administration of medications injections etc.

Assists physicians and midlevel providers in the acquisition and proper use of all supplies and equipment relating to the care of the patient.

Obtains pertinent and accurate information from the patient and communicates this information in a professional manner to the physicians and/or midlevel providers. In addition complete necessary documentation related to patient care and report to nurse or physician as indicated.

Assists clinical team in medication reconciliation process by taking and documenting a complete medication history as needed.

Accurately records all patient data and maintains all necessary records or files pertaining to the patient. This includes updating the LMR medical record or paper charting with vital signs etc.

Informs patients of any existing procedure or appointment delays and provides approximate waiting time.

Assists all patients in a courteous efficient helpful and professional manner.

Treats all patients and family members with dignity compassion and respect.

Appropriately prepares patient for examinations or procedures.

Assists physicians and midlevel providers during examinations procedures and care of patient.

Provide assistance at the front desk to direct patient inquiries as required.

    1. Direct telephone calls from patients to appropriate provider.
    2. Provide patient information only as directed by clinical staff.

Set up for sterile procedures and assist with procedures as directed.

Prepares all lab specimens complete required requisitions and arrange for transport to Clinical Lab as needed.

Performs EKGs Point of Service (POC) testing vital signs pulmonary function tests inventory and supply ordering and any other medical assistant tasks in accordance to protocol.

Sterilization and maintenance of instruments and packs for ambulatory procedures as needed.

    1. Clean and maintain autoclave per infection control policy.
    2. Carry out weekly spore tests and maintain records as required by the Joint Commission and Infection Control Department.
    3. Clean dressing containers in clinical area as required by policy.
    4. Be alert to the maintenance of high standards of cleanliness in clinical area

Stock educational and recreational materials in waiting area as required.

Follows all practice protocols and demonstrates accuracy in all procedures.

Maintains a professional relationship with physicians midlevel providers coworkers patients and management team.

Keeps physicians and staff up to date on patient volume and waiting status per unit standards.

Keeps all patientcare and procedure equipment clean and in good working order and reports equipment problems to nursing/management.

Keeps inventory of necessary supplies and equipment and orders supplies when items are needed.

Properly stocks patientcare area and makes cost effective use of supplies equipment and other resources.

Keeps all patientcare areas and work areas neat and clean and accurately utilizes all equipment and supplies.

Promotes collaborative work relationships and influences others to work collaboratively.

Performs all duties and tasks as requested by physicians nursing and management to ensure the efficient overall performance of the facility.

Attends all required staff meetings.

Performs annual competencies.

Performs other duties as assigned.
