Job Description
GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under general supervision and following established procedures and policies performs various analyses on body fluids using complex instrumentation and/or standard manual methods. Possesses and maintains a professional level of knowledge necessary to assure accurate test results.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Performs CBC routine coagulation testing body fluid analysis urinalysis and other miscellaneous test using complex analytical procedures and instruments and/or established manual methods.
2.Performs microscopic examination of peripheral blood smears urine sediments and body fluids.
3.If scheduled for day shift rotates through at least one of three specialty areas (Special Hematology Special Coagulation and Flow Cytometry) performing complex analytical procedures using automated instruments and/or established manual methods.
4.Performs and documents routine and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment and instrumentation to assure reliability and accuracy in reporting test results.
5.Performs and documents quality control testing according to established protocols.
6.Reviews test results for accuracy. Verifies results according to established protocols and enter results into patient files. Refers unusual results and problems to supervisor.
7.Complies with all technical standards and policies established by the Technical Director.
8.Participates in training new staff and clinical students.
9.Participates in proficiency testing as necessary.
10.Participates in internal and external continuing education programs.
11.Adheres to all established safety and infection control policies. Follows all OSHA guidelines.
12.Follows all National Safety Goals as developed by JCAHO.
13.Performs clerical support and other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1.Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
Or
Bachelors degree in a chemical physical or biological science from an accredited college or university and 2 years training/experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty.
Or
Other qualifications as described in the Federal Register 42 CFR Subpart M 493.
2.MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent preferred.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
1.Must have a high level of analytical and technical ability to operate complex laboratory equipment maintain their performance and resolve technical equipment problems.
2.Must have a comprehensive understanding of analytical techniques ability to relate test results to normal and pathological states and ability to interpret quality control data.
3.Must possess visual acuity to distinguish fine gradations of color and/or texture and manual dexterity sufficient to work with delicate instruments.
4.Must have understanding of computer technology and its applications in a clinical laboratory.
5.Must possess interpersonal skills to interact courteously and effectively with coworkers physicians students and other hospital personnel.
6.Must be well organized able to work independently and able to handle stressful situations.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1.Laboratory environment.
2.Exposure to odors infectious material and other hazardous materials.
3.Exposure to contact with needles broken glassware and other sharp material.
4.Visual strains encountered while using a microscope.
5.Frequent standing and occasional lifting of supplies is required.
6.Noise level is high due to continuous operation of laboratory equipment.
