The role of the occupational health unit is pivotal in delivering this commitment to achieve and attain a workplace culture where the wellbeing of our people is reflected in all that we do.

We are seeking an Occupational Health Practice Nurse to join our great inhouse Occupational Health and Wellbeing team. As a full time and permanent role it is a great opportunity for a registered nurse to join the team and support the service we provide to both the officers and staff of West Midlands Police. You will be enthusiastic organised a good communicator with a positive and flexible approach to work. This post is suitable for registered nurses who have not worked in occupational health previously as full role training will be given.

Under the supervision of a Senior Occupational Health Nurse Advisor you will participate in a number of duties including:

  • Working within departmental policies and procedures
  • Preplacement / preemployment health screening (health questionnaires facetoface and/or telephone assessments)
  • Conducting Health Surveillance such as Audiometry Spirometry etc.
  • Supporting health surveillance recall programmes
  • Fitness for Work/Task assessments (Inc. Firearms and Drivers medicals Vision screening Drug testing etc.
  • Requesting and reviewing medical reports from General Practitioner (GP) and/or specialists (If/when required)
  • Liaising with/Escalations to other team members within WMPs multidisciplinary team (e.g. Occupational Health Nurse Advisor Force Medical Advisor and/or Trauma Therapist)
  • Workplace immunisations (e.g. Hepatitis B) and Phlebotomy inc. reviewing the associated Hepatitis B blood test results
  • Provide advice to officers and/or staff following potential Blood Bourne Virus exposure (e.g. needle stick injury)
  • Signpost to other primary health care services (if and when appropriate)
  • Support (as required) with role risk assessments relating to workplace health hazards
  • Undertake the role of duty nurse (if/when required)
  • Participate in nursing and departmental meetings
  • Workplace health advice and health promotion(as required)

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Nurse Adult or Registered General Nurse
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a team player
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work under pressure and with minimal supervision
  • Enthusiastic and motivated.
  • Flexibility and a cando approach
  • Quality of care focus
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Ability to take responsibility and show initiative
  • Knowledge and skills up to date
  • Willingness to work at other WMP sites (when/if required)
  • Responsible for maintaining personal NMC revalidation requirements

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience/Knowledge of working in policing
  • Experience/knowledge of working in Occupational Health
  • Experience of working in community health care such as GP practice nursing or community nursing
  • An occupational health or travel health qualification

Prospective officers and staff must be held to a higher standard of behaviour and accountability than members of the public and that therefore their right to privacy can be fettered in certain circumstances. This is to ensure that members of the police are fully aware and accountable for the unique powers entrusted to them and the standards of professional behaviour they swear to uphold.

Hours:The post holder will be required to work core service hours (Monday Friday; 08:00 16:00. Working other hours such as Evenings Weekends and/or Bank Holidays would be by exception based on service need.

Location: Primarily based at Tally Ho! Edgbaston in Birmingham but travel within the force area may be required/necessary.

Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Management Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearancescrutiny prior to commencing their role this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.

Medical: Appointment to this role will be dependent upon successful medical clearance.
