Job Description

JOB GOALS: To provide preventive and responsive health care to corporation students and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Conduct school health screenings make appropriate referrals and submit health reports as required by Indiana law.
  2. Observe evidence based clinical guidelines as established by the National Association of School Nurses. Follow Indiana nurse practice acts.
  3. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) professional standards.
  4. Maintain standing orders and protocols in conjunction with local physicians.
  5. Uphold procedures for the prevention and control of communicable diseases in the School Corporation.
  6. Serve as a consultant to the administration school personnel parents/guardians and students in regards to individual health needs and community health concerns.
  7. Maintain student immunization records verify that students immunizations are compliant with state requirements. Update the Hoosier Immunization Registry Program database as indicated by state mandates and parental consent.
  8. Maintain all health records and update cumulative record folders and computerized student records as required.
  9. Collaborate with parents/guardians and physicians of students with health conditions. Develop individualized Health Plans as indicated and share pertinent information with staff as needed.
  10. Provide health education to students and parents/guardians as needed. Act as a consultant to staff regarding health education curriculum.
  11. Participate on the School Safety Committee.
  12. Be available and provide health counseling for students staff and the community as needed. Be familiar with health care resources in the community including physicians clinics for uninsured/underinsured lowincome families dentists mental health providers and the Medicaid application process. Make referrals as needed.
  13. Maintain a positive relationship with staff parents/guardians and students.
  14. Provide and document emergency care for illness or injury occurring during school hours according to established school policy.
  15. Keep the administration abreast of changes regarding community health regulations pertaining to the school corporation and provide recommendations as needed.
  16. Make home visits along with a building administrator regarding student health as necessary.
  17. Assess a student as directed and necessary who is suspected of being under the influence of or alcohol. Advocate for the students safety when collaborating with the building administrator and School Resource Officer (SRO).
  18. Assist in completing all accident report forms and submitting them to building principal.
  19. Assist in setting up adaptive PE programs with the physical education teachers for students with medical conditions preventing them from full participation in gym.
  20. Review field trip list and provide pertinent medical information and individualized emergency action plans as indicated to teachers along with first aid kit and any necessary medications needed for students.
  21. Be an active participant in case management and the Student Assistant Team.
  22. Participate in case conferences for students who have medical needs or who need handicap provisions arranged.
  23. Provide Universal Precautions Training for all employees and distribute gloves and bandages to staff as needed.
  24. Participate in 504 conferences for students and assist with designing the adaptive learning plan.
  25. Be available for emergency calls when needed even though they may be in another corporation building.
  26. Order supplies and equipment as needed for the school clinic.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Indiana Licensed Registered Nurse. Bachelor of Science in Nursing Preferred.

Must have strong clinical and assessment skills and the ability to practice autonomously and in collaboration with other corporation nurses to ensure consistent standards of care.

Must be knowledgeable of the changing growth and behavioral health patterns and how such changes affect children at all age levels.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS:

Current Indiana State RN License. Valid Healthcare Provider CPR certification.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read analyze and interpret general business periodicals professional journals technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers parents/guardians students and the public.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form. Must be capable of using good judgment in crucial situations as it affects the school community and the students. Must be responsible and willing to initiate action necessary to complete tasks as required.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear; and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Employee must also have basic computer skills in Word Excel Google Docs. Must be able to use health databases such as student information and electronic health records; Children and Hoosier Immunization Registry database; and The Learning Connection.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The work environment is mainly indoors other than routine errands. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 197 days per year. Pay level Per Classified Policy.

EVALUATION:

An evaluation will be done on the employees performance on an annual basis.
