The Waste Prevention & Environmental Services Department is looking for Variable Hour Traffic Control Load Inspection Technicians to work within a team to greet customers direct them where to drop off garbage and recycling materials safely manage traffic and inspect incoming trash loads for prohibited or suspicious waste items at Metros garbage and recycling dropoff station in Oregon City.
This entrylevel position is essential to making sure that our facility runs safely that customers have a positive experience at our site and that we protect the environment by safely processing different kinds of trash. People selected for this job will be working at Metro South Transfer Station a very busy industrialtype facility where residents small businesses and large garbage haulers deposit trash recycling and yard debris for processing and disposal. Located at 2001 Washington Street in Oregon City Metro South serves several hundred customers each day. The station operates 362 days a year except for New Years Thanksgiving and Christmas days. Variable Hour Traffic/Load Inspection Technicians shifts start as early as 2:45 a.m. to serve commercial garbage and recycling haulers before the station opens to the public at 7:00 a.m.
As a Variable Hour Traffic Control Load Inspection Technician you will:
- Greet customers at their vehicles when they arrive onsite.
- Direct vehicle traffic at and around Metro South with a focus on safety.
- Ask customers about and inspect customer trash loads for prohibited and suspicious waste.
- Review and organize wasterelated paperwork.
- Communicate with and educate customers about proper waste disposal and recycling methods.
- Build and maintain respectful and positive working relationships with other Inspectors the Traffic supervisor other Metro South teams and others at the site.
- Provide coworkers and customers with information and assistance as needed.
- Attend trainings meetings or events that pertain to the job as assigned by the Traffic supervisor.
- Perform this work or other tasks during site emergencies such as dangerous material traffic accidents customer conflicts hazardous weather events and site evacuations.

TO QUALIFY

Minimum qualifications
- Completion of a job preparation course provided by a communitybased organization or community college or previous related experience and
- A high school diploma or GED or
- Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge skills and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities
Like to have qualifications
You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However keep in mind we may consider them when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education work experience including the military or life experience that are relevant for this position.
- Prior experience managing traffic preferably at an industrial or construction site.
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- HAZWOPER training
- AHERA Inspector Certification
- Experience with the Incident Command system for emergency management
Working Conditions
Variable Hour Traffic Control/Load Inspection Technicians work outdoors rain or shine when they are greeting and directing customers and inspecting their materials. Technicians stand or walk on pavement for most of their shift and workaround and very near a wide variety of vehicles including cars trucks and garbage vehicles. The environment can be loud and at times may smell of vehicle exhaust and garbage.
Schedule
Variable Hour employees are limited to working no more than 1040 hours a year from the date of hire. Scheduled shifts are available based on business need and will be determined with your supervisor.
Most Variable Hour Traffic/Load Inspection Technicians are scheduled for four eight or tenhour shifts between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. A TriMet bus stop is located just outside the entrance to Metro South at stop 2000Block Washington (ID 14047.

COMPENSATION BENEFITS AND REPRESENTATON
The rate of pay for this position is $22.67 per hour step 1. of the Traffic Control/Load Inspection Technician I classification.
This position is eligible for overtime and is represented by ASCME 3580. It is classified as a Traffic Control/Load Inspection Technician I classification.
