The Shelter Medicine Fellowship at Louisiana State University is a 1 year program designed to provide advanced training in the specialty of shelter medicine.
Mentor students daily about shelter medicine and surgery. Bring students to shelters and supervise physical exams and treatments. Participate on the mobile unit which includes supervising anesthesia and surgery. Help with shelter inspections and management issues. Participate in 2 Spay Days during the year as a surgeon.
Participate with ongoing research projects and sample collection. Participate and assist with the surgery labs September through December as scheduling permits.
In the event of an emergency accompany the mobile unit for disaster medicine issues. Attend and participate in VCS Seminar Series (present 1 seminar) for house officer rounds. Attend or present at Louisiana Animal Control Associations yearly meeting. Participate and help organize community educational seminars hosted by Shelter Medicine program. Participate and help organize community outreach events EX: LSUSVM Open House and media events. Participate in admissions interviews and folder review for potential veterinary students. Supervise organize andattend shelter medicine/ HSVMA club events. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent
Must have Louisiana Veterinary License prior to hire.
Special or Physical Qualifications:
Per PS18 employee may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure.
Required to work a variety of shifts including nights weekends and holidays.
Due to the nature of the position and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.
