Position Summary
The After Camp Educator Lead a group of up to 18 children in fun multiage aftercamp activities 35pm 56pm) with opportunities to explore the New York Botanical Garden grounds as well as relevant outdoor classroombased experiences (weather dependent). Establish a fun and engaging environment for after campers from Science Camp and Edible Academy Camp to learn and play together. Develop and lead active handson science and nature games and activities and collaborate with camp staff team to lead activities throughout the NYBG landscape. Supervise and mentor 1 Camp Assistant & 2 Camp Explainers (paid teens) on daily responsibilities and duties.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist Camp staff at Science Camp with activities/recess to get to know campers during their camp day
- Plan and coordinate daily and weekly aftercamp program and schedule including independently planning and implementing science/naturebased lessons for the after campers.
- Support Explainers in their role of helping campers with daily tasks; i.e. helping campers keep track of personal items participate in large and small group activities and escorting small groups of students to the restroom
- Build strong relationships with Campers and Camp staff
- Supervise safe and orderly pickup at end of After Camp
- Maintain close communication with Camp staff to mitigate behavioral and scheduling issues
- Must be able to commit to actively participating in orientation/training Juneam5pm and leading 36 weeks of after camp June 30 July 18 2025no camp July 4 (entering grades PreK8th grade) and July 28August 15 2025 (entering grades PreK8th grade); 10am6pm schedule.
Qualifications
An outgoing and friendly personality with excellent oral communications skills is essential. Candidate must have experience teaching outdoors with large groups of children with varied learning needs as well as relevant student age group experience based on position. Candidate must be responsible punctual professional motivated selfstarter and able to mentor others. A background in science education and/or museum studies required. Candidate must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather and have experience teaching handson inquirybased lessons with live plants and living organisms. Foreign language is helpful but not essential.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this position the employee is required to at minimum traverse across the Garden landscape while teaching groups of children; work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions; be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; kneel or crouch down to plant or child level.
Baseline Work Schedule:
Monday Friday 10am 6pm
Temporary Part Time Position
Pay Rate : $25/hr
