OVERVIEW OF POSITION:
The attorney in this position is responsible for ensuring zealousrepresentation of indigentdefendants in collateral attacks onconvictions. The successful candidate will combine theirdemonstrateddedication to the representation of indigent clients with their stronglitigation skillsto provide exceptional representation in post convictionand other related proceedings. PostConviction Defenders are expected towork independently in managing active caseloads whilesimultaneouslyworking in a teamoriented environment focused on a clientcentered approach torepresentation. This position requires travel throughout the state ofMaryland. However theoffice is located in Baltimore Maryland. We willconsider candidates at all experience levels.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Passionate and zealous representation of clients in postconvictionproceedings including butnot limited to conducting extensive legalresearch writing persuasive legal briefsinterviewing potentialwitnesses preparing for hearings conducting effective directandcrossexaminations and negotiating alternative resolutions.
Ability to manage an active hearing schedule and heavy caseloadcompetently andresourcefully.
Represent clients in hearings for motions for modification requestsfor drug treatment andother similar motions.
Effectively and compassionately communicate with incarcerated clientstheir familiescolleagues and service providers to ensure optimaloutcomes for clients.
Ensure clients are consistently heard and respected.
Continuously seek professional and personal development throughtraining continuing legaleducation trial skills courses and keepingapprised of new and relevant case law.
Other duties as assigned by the State Public Defender.
Education: A Juris Doctorate degree or equivalent degree from anaccredited school of law.
Experience: Experience as a practicing Attorney.
Notes:
1. Candidates shall be an Attorney and admitted to practice law inthe State by the Court of Appeals of Maryland at the time of appointment.
2. The above requirements are set by the Office of the PublicDefender in accordance with Criminal Procedure Article Section 16203 of theAnnotated Code of Maryland.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military serviceexperience as a commissioned officer in general attorney classification orgeneral attorney specialty codes in the legal and kindred group field of workon a yearforyear basis for the required experience and education.

Salary is dependent on experience and salary rules will apply to State ofMaryland employees.
