Job Description

Ohio Wesleyan University www.owu is a selective private undergraduate liberal arts residential institution founded in 1842 and is located just 20 miles north of Columbus.

Career Connection invites applications for the Career Catalyst STEM & PreHealth Position.

The Career Catalyst uses independent analysis and judgement to develop coordinate and supervise complex and administrative tasks in order to provide exemplary career assistance to students on campus within the STEM and PreHealth Career Communities.

The ideal Career Catalyst has experience working with diverse audiences engaging with and attracting diverse employer contacts and internship opportunities and providing programming directly related to career needs of diverse students and alumni.

Responsibilities:

Engage as an active member of the Career Connection team attending regular meetings and participating at team events. Supervise a student intern who will assist with the newsletter marketing needs and resume reviews. Oversee four distinct areas of responsibility:


1. Student Career Coaching and Event Planning

  • Conduct careeradvising appointments on resume/cover letter writing interview strategies etc. to help students complete a successful job search in STEM & PreHealth.
  • Facilitate student learning by assisting students in securing appropriate internships to enhance their overall academic experience.
  • Plan and conduct workshops and engagement opportunities to provide students with professional development.
  • Oversee Career Community programs for STEM & PreHealth including the PreHealth Shadowing program STEM Internship & Research programs and other signature events.
  • Guide students who find themselves in the minority of certain professional industries and conduct special events/initiatives for diversity engagement.

2. Research Grant Writing and Professional/Graduate School Support

  • Provide direct support to the Think Big component of the OWU Connection which includes helping students secure SSRP and other research opportunities on and off campus.
  • Review Graduate/Professional school applications with students and support faculty in this role.
  • Help students complete NSF GRFP applications and other grant applications.

3. Employer and Alumni Engagement with Internship Development/Coordination

  • Communicate with new and existing employers about job opportunities upcoming events and specific student connections. Track engagements with employers.
  • Organize new and developing opportunities into emails/newsletters for students on a biweekly basis.
  • Form partnerships with minorityled businesses & organizations to expand opportunities.
  • Coordinate with faculty and academic departments to identify and promote internships and opportunities for specific majors.
  • Develop relationships with Alumni Partners and regularly connect Alumni with students.

4. Provide direct support to the Choose Ohio First Schimmel Scholars and IRIIP programs

  • Partner with faculty to advise cohorts of students in the Choose Ohio First (COF) and Schimmel Scholars programs which includes planning events running seminars and collecting data.
  • Conduct 1:1 advising appointments with students in these programs to advise on scholarship requirements and fund usage.
  • Handle communications with faculty/advisors admissions representatives and advancement staff in facilitating these programs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in related field; required. Masters degree preferred.
  • Industry experience in career counseling human resources or specific career community industry; 3 years preferred.
  • Background in STEM and/or healthrelated fields preferred.
  • Passion for working with students.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Teamwork mentality.
  • Excellent attention to detail and followthrough.
  • Successful experience working with persons from diverse backgrounds.
  • Successful experience quickly learning new computer systems and applications.
