GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Working under the general direction of the Associate Director and Operations Manager of the Group Practice Management department (GPM) in the Professional Billing Office (PBO) the GPM Manager serves a dual role in the Department as both a Billing Manager and direct supervisor to his or her assigned team.
As a Billing Manager the individual is the primary contactbetween agroup practice and the Professional Billing Office for all aspects relating to the billing of professional services. The Billing Manager is responsible for the following: proactive management of the billing process and a full understanding of the practices revenue cycle; maintaining a positive and strong client relationship; a thorough understanding of systems processes and servicespecific coding and billing requirements; proactive identification of opportunities for revenue cycle improvement and enhancement; providing practice and PBO Management with interpretation of standard operational billing and budget data on a monthly basis.
As a Manager and working closely with the departments AD and Operations Manager the individual will conduct weekly team meetings attend and participate in weekly management and staff meetings ensure that the various goals and objectives of the department are implemented and assist in researching and explaining budget variances. The Manager will be responsible for conducting timely merit reviews for all assigned staff and will work to ensure that all staff are trained appropriately and follow established service standards.
The breakdown of time between the positions is approximately 25 Billing Manager and 75 GPM Manager. The MGPO Professional Billing Office is the central billing office for physician practices affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston Massachusetts.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

BILLING MANAGER

GPM MANAGER

Exhibit leadership and represent the GPM with the highest degree of professionalism at all times. Set an example to your Team GPM and the PBO
Work with the departments management team to hire train mentor and retain qualified staff
Manage direct reports by providing including but not limited to timely merit reviews mentoring including monthly meetings with all direct reports teambuilding exercises training and discipline
Conduct weekly team meetings to address issues resolve problems and implement department policy as it relates to new business or established business objectives and/or standards
Meet weekly with the Operations Manager and monthly with the AD and Operations Manager to review tasks goals progress and human resource issues. Carry out assigned duties as required
Provide a comprehensive orientation to all new GPM staff by partnering with the training team and the Operations Manager
Create and maintain materials and train Third Party staff for team or practicespecific billing documents on (a minimum) annual basis
Meet monthly with Coding and Third Party counterparts
Participate in strategic planning committees or task forces as needed or assigned
Be the contact person for TESrelated issues: manage encounter flow and edit aging; help to create or modify new or existing edits; ensure that all edits adhere to established PBO standards; ensure that staff are trained on how to work in TES and how to resolve edits as well as how to clear Ingenix edits; create maintain and distribute documentation related to how to clear all Billing Manager specific edits
Attend individual team members practice meetings as needed in order to ensure that the Departments service standards are being met
Serve as the primary backup to team members or their assigned groups as needed
Exceptional understanding of IDX billing systems
Strong analytical and presentation skills
Ability to manage staff and foster a positive professional atmosphere
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors degree required graduate degree preferred
35 years experience in a professional healthcare setting required
Prefer at least 1 year of experience as a Billing Manager in the GPM department
Previous supervisory experience preferred
Strong background in billing operations with knowledge of medical billing coding and IDX required
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Solid understanding of healthcare billing finance and accounting principals
Exceptional understanding of IDX billing systems
Strong analytical and presentation skills
Ability to manage staff and foster a positive professional atmosphere
Ability to present to multiple levels of staff including but not limited to Vice Presidents Administrative Directors Managers providers PBO colleagues and front desk staff
Requires excellent oral and written communications skills
Ability to successfully manage numerous tasks simultaneously
Must be able to participate in managementsponsored strategy and planning sessions as well as implement new programs and policies in the Department and across the PBO
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel Word Access Outlook) required
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The MGPO Professional Billing Office is located in the Charlestown Navy Yard campus
The hours are usually Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM but vary according to the demands on this exempt salaried position
The work environment is very busy and dynamic
Staff is very collaborative and work together to solve issues with particular practice issues
There are often multiple conversations occurring at the same time the staff needs to be able to handle an environment that is not quiet
The employee is required to travel to any Partners facilities to attend offsite meetings. This includes travel to new client sites
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
The GPM Manager manages between 5 and 15 individuals depending on the team
Positions supervised will be Billing Managers Business Analysts Fiscal Liaisons and/or Assistant Billing Managers project coordinators
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
The fiscal responsibility varies based on the practice(s) covered by the GPM Manager. The combined charges and revenue for assigned practices will vary depending on the team.
The GPM Manager will ensure that budgets for each Fiscal Year are both reasonable and submitted in a timely fashion. The number of individual budgets that need to be managed will depend on the team but will vary from between 5 and 70. This position will require a close working relationship with the Operations Manager and Associate Director during the annual budgeting process.
