Accessibility Services at Mount Saint Vincent University invites applications for the position of Accessibility Advisor

What youll do

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager Accessibility Services the Accessibility Advisor is responsible for the comprehensive planning implementation and monitoring of individualized academic accommodations for students with disabilities ensuring MSVUs compliance with its legal duty to accommodate. This role involves conducting thorough assessments of student needs identifying alternative methods for student participation in learning environments determining appropriate and reasonable accommodation and collaborating closely with instructors to facilitate implementation. Accessibility Advisors work directly with students on a oneonone basis and are tasked with independently making accommodation decisions providing funding support and referring students to appropriate assistive technologies.


The Accessibility Advisor is additionally responsible for monitoring understanding and interpreting trends and developments in the disability field and for flexibly and creatively translating those developments when appropriate into institutional policies and procedures; increasing campus awareness of disability as a facet of diversity and furthering the integration of disability considerations into the Universitys culture and practices; ensuring the removal of barriers and that students with disabilities are receiving equitable access to education.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a university degree with a minimum of two years of directly related experience in a service environment (PostSecondary and/or student services preferred) with direct experience supporting individuals with disabilities.


The skills necessary in working with students with disabilities Deaf and Neurodivergent persons working with faculty; requiring negotiation conflict resolution diplomacy tact and sensitivity to ensure that the accommodations and services meet the needs of all stakeholders. Applying sound judgment in the absence of welldefined unambiguous policies and legislation or in the absence of precedence. Skills in active listening and strong studentcentered service building strong internal and external relationships and the ability to adhere to procedures and deadlines are required. The Accessibility Advisor must stay current on everchanging best practices legislation and case law and works in full commitment to equity diversity and inclusion. Candidates should be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Word PowerPoint) and have an aptitude for or previous experience using business enterprise systems such as Colleague and SharePoint.
