QUALIFICATIONS:
Nurse Practitioner:
Minimum of Masters Degree in Nursing and previous experience in an academic medical environment preferred.
Ideally have 13 years of prior related experience in the Advanced Practice role in Neurosurgery Orthopedics or other surgical subspecialty
Critical care experience and /or clinical nursing experience preferred
Hold current certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult Nurse Practitioner.
Hold current valid
Hold a current valid Federal DEA certificate.
Hold a current valid State Controlled Substance Certificate in the
ACLS provider trained.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Requires independent judgment.
Ability to work well under pressure.
Broad knowledge of medical environment and academically oriented surgical practice.
Ability to exercise the highest degree of professional judgment under the direction and guidance of a licensed physician.
Qualified in all basic and advanced cardiac life support standards as established by the American Heart Association.
Knowledge of bedside and operating room procedures and priorities.
Possess the maturity selfconfidence and ability to follow complex patient management plans as directed by the attending surgeon.
Eligible for state and federally controlled substances registration.
Is knowledgeable and compliant in all hospital State and Federal regulatory requirements including hospital policy and procedures (where applicable to the performance of the job) Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work will be performed in both the outpatient and inpatient settings at NewtonWellesley Hospital. The work may require the lifting of heavy objects and patients as well as exposure to potentially infective material. Work requires contact with needles and other sharp instruments. Prolonged standing can be expected. Walking to and from the patient care units can be expected.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES
I. Clinical Practice:
Obtains health and medical history performs physical examination and constructs problem list.
Collects records and interprets patient data.
Orders appropriate laboratory radiological and other diagnostic studies.
Examination preoperative teaching postoperative evaluation and management and followup.
Prescribes Schedule IIVI medications in accordance with guidelines developed with the supervising physician.
Evaluates followup patients.
Removes sutures/staples.
Performs minor procedures such as wound care.
Completes disability paperwork for patients.
Fills out visiting nursing paperwork for patients.
May function as a surgical first assistant by performing such functions as but not limited to the following:
Assist the attending physician in the preparation of the patient for the surgical procedure
Positioning the patient prior to surgery
Insertion of lines (subclavian arterial etc. as necessary
Sterile preparation and draping of the patient
Assistance with opening of the case as in laminectomy craniotomy burr holes etc.
Assist in the general operation as needed
II. Communication:
Serves as an information resource for patients.
Returns patient phone calls.
Communicates care plan to all referring providers MD of record and patients/patient families.
Responsible for communication and coordination with residents fellows nurses and other physicians involved with the care of hospitalized patients.
Coordinates interface between inpatient and outpatient care.
General orders discharges interface with postoperative patients
