Summary:
Amo Ososwan School located in Anishinabeg territory in Western Quebec is an Englishspeaking school that blends the Ontario curriculum with Algonquin language and culture classes offering a unique learning environment deeply rooted in Algonquin traditions.
We are seeking a Woodworking Instructor who will report to the High School Principal. The instructor will work closely with a certified teacher to develop and deliver an instructional program aligned with Ontarios Secondary School Technological Education curriculum. This program will focus on design project planning and handson skills such as measuring cutting shaping joining and finishing wood as well as foundational construction techniques.
In addition the instructor will prepare woodworking projects for younger grades providing precut materials for assembly and finishing and guiding students through the activities. Other responsibilities include managing the shop ensuring safety maintaining tools and equipment operating machinery and ordering materials. The instructor will also assist with attendance grading student feedback and report cards in collaboration with the certified teacher.
Duties:
- Collaborate with the certified teacher to develop and deliver a program that progresses in difficulty integrating a variety of skills techniques and materials in alignment with the Ontario Technological Studies curriculum.
- Instruct students in Grades 711 on the design process project planning woodworking techniques and tool safety while introducing key concepts in construction technology including carpentry.
- Teach and enforce the safe use of tools and safety gear to ensure a safe environment for students.
- Operate maintain and ensure the proper functioning of woodworking machinery and recommend new equipment or servicing when necessary.
- Order supplies and materials as needed for projects in the woodworking shop.
- Keep the woodworking shop organized and clean ensuring tools and materials are stored properly and any hazards are promptly addressed.
- Assist with attendance grading student feedback and report cards in collaboration with the certified high school teacher.
- Introduce students to career opportunities in the construction industry.
- Prepare precut woodworking projects for younger grades and lead students through the assembly process.
Mandatory Requirements:
- Minimum of a high school diploma with preference given to candidates who have postsecondary education or certification in a related field (e.g. woodworking carpentry construction technology).
- Previous experience in carpentry or construction (at least 12 years) in either an educational or professional setting.
- Proficient in using common woodworking machinery such as saws drills sanders and routers.
- Knowledge of shop safety including safe machine operation and proper use of safety gear.
- Ability to maintain a safe organized and clean workshop environment.
- Ability to teach Grades 711 ensuring a positive and safe environment.
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with students staff and the school community.
- Ability to collaborate with a team including working closely with a certified teacher on curriculum development and delivery.
- Must pass a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).
Preferred Skills and Knowledge:
- Understanding of Algonquin culture and community values.
- Understanding of Ontarios Technological Studies curriculum.
- Experience developing lesson plans aligned with curriculum objectives.
- Experience teaching technical or handson subjects.
- Skills in other constructionrelated trades are welcome.
- Knowledge of career opportunities in construction and carpentry.
- Ability to integrate Algonquin cultural practices into projects such as marten boxes and tikinagans.
