The BannekerDouglassTubman Museum Marylands official museum of African Americanheritage preserves and promotes the states African American history and culture. Throughexhibitions programs and projects the museum fosters a deeper understanding andappreciation of Americas diverse cultural legacy. It is operated by the Maryland Commission onAfrican American History and Culture.

POSITION DUTIES

Contract Duration: 6 months

Position Summary:
The BannekerDouglassTubman Museum seeks a qualified Processing Archivist to develop acomprehensive assessment plan for the newly acquired Verda Freeman Welcome archive. Theselected archivist will evaluate preserve and facilitate access to the collection which includespersonal papers photographs correspondence and other historically significant materials. Thegoal is to ensure the collection is properly preserved and made accessible to researcherseducators and the public.

Key Responsibilities:

Collection Assessment:
  • Conduct a preliminary survey to evaluate the size condition and content of the Verda Freeman Welcome archive.
  • Identify material types (e.g. paper documents photographs audiovisuals) and any special conservation needs.
  • Assess potential risks to the collection and recommend immediate preservation measures.

Development of an Assessment Plan:
  • Create a detailed roadmap for processing preserving and digitizing the collection.
  • Provide recommendations for cataloging storage and access that align with archival best practices.
  • Identify conservation treatments required for fragile or deteriorating materials.

Recommendations for Future Work:
  • Propose a phased approach for processing the collection including estimated timelines and resource requirements.
  • Identify areas that require further research or expert consultation.
  • Suggest methods to enhance public accessibility including potential digitization initiatives and exhibition opportunities.

Reporting and Consultation:
  • Prepare a final report summarizing key findings recommendations and a proposed action plan.
  • Meet with museum staff and stakeholders to present the assessment plan and address questions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) Archival Studies Public History or a 3 years of experience in archival processing preservation and description.
  • Knowledge of archival best practices including descriptive standards (e.g. DACS EAD) and preservation techniques.
  • Experience working with fragile or deteriorating collections and implementing conservation measures. Familiarity with digitization projects and digital asset management systems.
  • Strong research writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with museum staff and stakeholders.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicantswho possess the following preferred qualification(s).Include clear and specific information on your application regardingyour qualifications.

  • Experience working with collections related to African American history and political activism.
  • Knowledge of Marylands legislative history and the contributions of Senator Verda Freeman Welcome.
  • Experience in exhibition planning and community engagement related to archival materials.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees may be required to lift up to 50 pounds when record shipments arrive and climb ladders. Employees in this classification must exercise caution during the retrieval and replacement of heavy volumes from library shelves particularly when using library ladders. Employees may work a rotating shift and may be required to work Saturdays.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee you will be responsible for paying 25 of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75 of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage accidental death and dismemberment insurance and life insurance but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
