NICU Staff Nurse Job Description
Overview
The NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Staff Nurse plays a vital role in providing specialized care to critically ill newborns and premature infants. This position is essential in ensuring that the most vulnerable patients receive the highest level of medical attention which can significantly impact their health outcomes and development. NICU nurses operate in a fastpaced environment working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team including neonatologists pediatricians and other healthcare professionals. They are entrusted with monitoring vital signs administering medications and performing advanced nursing procedures while offering emotional support to families during challenging times. Their comprehensive training and expertise enable them to recognize and respond to any changes in their patients conditions swiftly. In Fatehpur Uttar Pradesh the NICU Staff Nurse will be at the forefront of neonatal care aiding in providing an environment conducive to healing for infants and reassurance for their families.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct and individualized nursing care to neonates in the NICU.
  • Monitor vital signs and conditions of highrisk infants on a continuous basis.
  • Administer medications and intravenous fluids as per physicians orders.
  • Perform physical assessments to evaluate the health status of infants.
  • Manage and maintain specialized equipment utilized in neonatal care.
  • Coordinate with healthcare teams in developing and implementing care plans.
  • Educate and support families on infant care and health matters.
  • Document all patient care activities accurately and timely.
  • Participate in shift handovers and maintain clear communication among team members.
  • Identify and report any changes in a patient s condition to physicians promptly.
  • Assist in procedures and interventions as needed.
  • Maintain a clean safe environment adhering to infection control protocols.
  • Support lactation and feeding processes for premature and sick infants.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training in neonatal care.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the NICU.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor s degree in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent experience.
  • Current nursing license issued by the appropriate governing body.
  • Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
  • 12 years of experience in a NICU or pediatric setting preferred.
  • Strong understanding of neonatal diseases and interventions.
  • Ability to work shifts including nights and weekends as needed.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations with poise.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Comfort with the use of diagnostic equipment for neonatal patients.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Deep commitment to patient care and family involvement.
  • Critical thinking and problemsolving abilities.
  • Willingness to participate in continuing education and training.
