Job Description
Position Purpose
The Needham Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Teacher to be the lead teacher in our specialized program (Intensive Learning Center ILC) to support students with intellctual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This position begins in August 2025. Under the general supervision of the Special Education Coordinator and School Principal the Special Education Teacher will work to maximize the learning experience of students with special needs in academics interpersonal skills and activities of daily living by implementing district approved curriculum; document teaching and student progress/activities outcomes; address students specific needs; and provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
Essential Functions:
Academic
- Knowledge of curriculum for each grade (currently 2nd 4th and 5th) for subjects of Social Studies Science Math and ELA as well as ability to individually modify for each of the students in each classroom
- Run small group lessons for students
- Implement evidence based reading and math instruction (e.g. Wilson)
- Provide modifications support implementation of accommodations
- Provide alternate materials and assessments when needed (including McasAlts)
Behavior
- Work closely with BCBA to keep behavior support plans uptodate and ensure that all IAs are aware of any changes or updates made
- Train IAs on behavior plans/updates
Classroom Management
- Comfortable managing several IAs
- Create and edit schedule for all students across grades and classrooms as needed to ensure students receive all services on IEPs
- Organize and prepare data collection and academic work
- Schedule notify and prepare appropriate paperwork/assessments for annual or reevaluation meetings
- Train IAs on how to teach material run small groups and provide feedback as needed
Administrative
- Evaluate students write reports and present findings at Team meetings
- MCAS alternative assessments
- Weekly Consultations with ILC team and classroom teachers
- Parent Communication
Additional Duties
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal Special Education Coordinator and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
Skills Knowledge Abilities
- Knowledge of Special Education principles theories testing methods etc. as well as proven methods of maximizing the educational experience of students with special needs.
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of data information systems data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in selfevaluation and personal reflection with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Qualifications:
- MA DESE certification in Moderate or Severe Disabilities PreK8 or 512
- BCBA credentials preferred
- Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment
- Masters Degree in Special Education.
- Successful priorlead teacher experience required
- Experience developing and modifying program books
