Job Description

Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administratorof the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (System). The System is aqualified defined benefit retirement plan providing retirement disability anddeath benefits to over 400000 members retirees and beneficiaries. TheSystems members include State employees teachers of all County schools withinMaryland Correctional Officers State Police Officers Judges Legislatorsand employees of local governments that elect to participate in the System.

**This position is not eligible for Telework.**

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the position is to support staff with the heavy workloads experienced by the Agency during the months of May June July and August. During this time the Agency is closing our databases and files for the prior fiscal year 7/1/20246/30/2025 and opening our files for the new fiscal year 7/1/20256/30/2026 and managing high volumes of new enrollments July 1st retirements and refunds of former members.

POSITION DUTIES

The Benefit Administration Division of the Maryland StateRetirement Agency is recruiting for five 5 summer internship positions. Theseare fulltime positions scheduled to work Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to4:30 p.m. or 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in our offices located at 120 E. BaltimoreStreet Baltimore Maryland 21202. Selected candidates will be expected tostart work on May 21 2025 and continue through August 19 2025. These datesare flexible for candidates who need to start a week later or leave a weekearly due to school schedules.

These are hands on positions. Duties may include:

Reviewing pension payroll data to resolve data errors.

Reviewing and processing new enrollmentapplications.

Reviewing and processing retirement applications.

Reviewing and processing refund applications and taxwithholding forms.

Assisting with reconciling production jobs.

Preparing mailings.

Filing completed work.

Other administrative and office support functions.

Selected candidates will gain valuable experience workingin a professionalenvironment and willacquire valuable knowledge of defined benefit retirement plans.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school andpursuing a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Pursuing or intent to pursue a bachelors degree inAccounting Business Administration Economics Finance Management PublicAdministration or related fields.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered underthe State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program have acurrent employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage forthemselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee you will beresponsible for paying 25 of the premiums for your medical and prescriptioncoverage including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State ofMaryland will subsidize the remaining 75 of the cost for these benefits. Youcan also elect to enroll in dental coverage accidental death anddismemberment insurance and life insurance but will beresponsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hourfor every 30 hours worked not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
