The Maryland Capitol Police Candidate Trainee position is the entrylevellaw enforcement work within the Maryland Capitol Police. Employees in thisclass attend a Police Training Academy to learn how to enforce Local State andFederal Laws and departmental rules and regulations.
Employees in this classification must attend the law enforcement academyand pass the Entrance Level Police Training Course required by the MarylandPolice and Correctional Training Commission and the Maryland Capitol Police.
Employeesin this classification are considered Emergency Essential personnel and must bewilling and be available for duty at all hours.Employees may be required to remain on duty and report for duty at suchhours as needed to maintain the continuous operation of this agency. If you arethe selected candidate for this position you will be required to complete aPreEmployment Physical and substance abuse screening which will assess yourability to safely perform the essential functions of this position.
Police Officer Trainee is an entrylevel law enforcement role focused onlearning to enforce laws and ensure safety. Trainees work under closesupervision and may be assigned various shifts including nights weekends andholidays with potential callins and overtime. This position is classified asemergency essential requiring duty during emergencies. Work may involveoutdoor assignments in different weather conditions. The role progresses asfollows:
Trainee Learns underclose supervision.
Officer I Works underclose or general supervision
Officer II Performs fullduties under general supervision.
Employees in this classification may be assigned to work oneither a rotating or fixed shift basis including nights evenings weekendsand/or holidays. They are subject to call to duty in emergencies and may berequired to work overtime with little or no notice. Upon completion of theacademy training officers will be assigned to a Division at the discretion ofthe Police Department.
The work of this classification entails frequent walkingand standing and the operation of vehicles and firearms. It also requiresexposure to potentially hazardous law enforcement and public safety activitiesand conditions such as adverse weather and armed and dangerous people.
Upon successfully completing the agility test backgroundinvestigation and psychological and medical examination passers of thephysical agility tests will be considered for attendance at the police trainingacademy. The Police Academy is a 27week academic physical and practicaltraining program that introduces recruits to a career in law enforcement.
The paramilitary academy challenges recruits todevelop selfdiscipline perform under stressful situations and focus onteamwork. After graduation from the Police Academy you will be among the mosthighly trained police officers in the state and part of a family of motivatedand proud law enforcement officers.
Education:Graduationfrom an accredited high school or high school equivalency certificateacceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in theMaryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.
1.Employees in this classification who have not already done so mustsuccessfully complete the Entrance Level Police Training Course required by theMaryland Police and Correctional Training Commission during the probationaryperiod.
1.Selection standards for Police Officer certification are established bythe Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance withPublic Safety Article Section 3207 Annotated Code of Maryland. These selection criteria are listed in detailin the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.04 and include the following:
U.S. Citizenship.
Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
Satisfactory background investigation including a check of criminalhistory and have no felony convictions.
Oral interview.
Physical and psychological examinations truth verification and drugtest (COMAR 12.04.01.04.
Possession of a drivers license valid in the State of Maryland withless than 5 points.

3.Employees in this classification may be required to bear firearms and todemonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care offirearms on a periodic basis as required by the Maryland Police andCorrectional Training Commission.
