Radiation Protection Operations Services Group assists BNL departments and divisions in developing and implementing their ES&H programs.
The Radiation Protection Operations Group Manager at Brookhaven National Laboratory leads and manages radiation protection activities to ensure safe effective and compliant radiological operations across the laboratory. This role involves developing and maintaining staff capabilities overseeing radiological safety programs ensuring regulatory compliance and fostering a strong safety culture. The manager is responsible for leading a staff of field deployed technicians and first line supervisors setting performance expectations monitoring field activities interfacing with regulatory compliance/oversight and line management. Additionally they provide technical expertise in radiation protection emergency response and environmental compliance while supporting the mission of the laboratory through solutionsoriented leadership.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop staff capability to meet future needs by building new competencies maintaining an appropriately trained and motivated staff and supporting their longterm professional development.
Ensure that work is planned and completed within established controls and according to Laboratory priorities and customersanctioned schedule budget and deliverables. Set goals for evaluate and address staff performance.
Assist in the development of business or science programs according to organizations plans.
Serve as a key advocate for the development and of a strong Safety Culture Work Environment (SCWE) across BNL organizational boundaries.
provide exceptional leadership and support for achieving solutionsoriented services that enables the mission of the Laboratory.
Ensure the quality of products and services. Measure and monitor them for continual improvement.
Ensure safe effective and compliant operations preventing pollution minimizing waste and conserving resources.
Interface with BNL senior management external subcontractors regulatory agencies and represent BNL in forums with peers and management of other National Labs
Comply with Laboratory policies standards and procedures and regulatory requirements.
Maintain awareness of environmental impact of work and apply pollution prevention and waste minimization techniques.
Identify potential hazards environmental concerns and unsafe conditions or practices in work or at work site and implement or suggest controls to minimize risk.
Cease work activity and/or issue a Stop Work Order upon observing imminent danger and report the danger immediately to supervisor or SHSD Coordinator.
Report and document noncompliances with radiological regulations standards and procedures; as well as reviewing nonconformances for PAAA applicability.
Respond to emergency situations alarms or occurrence in an appropriate manner. Adhere to instructions on location warning signs and postings.
Monitor contractor progress in accordance with the contracts terms and schedule by interfacing with the technical representative for each contract issued by the department/division.
Effectively communicate and interface with the U.S. Department of Energy state and local response agencies and other DOE contractors.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Bachelors degree in health physics or related technical field
Eight 8 years professional fulltime progressively responsible experience in operational radiation protection.
4 years demonstrated management/leadership experience. This must include formal supervisory experience in managing radiation protection operations activities.
Ability to communicate concisely and effectively both orally and in writing with all levels of management employees guests and representatives of regulatory agencies is required.
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Masters degree in health physics or related technical field
Certification as a Health Physicist by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) and/or Certification as a Registered Radiation Protection Technologist by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT)
Previous experience at DOE and/or NRC Agreement State facilities
Experience as a radiological or ALARA engineer radiological control supervisor or RCT
Experience or education in industrial hygiene industrial safety environmental protection or emergency management
Experience in subcontract management
Experience managing budget procedures

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $138850 $190000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
