Job Title: Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)
Reports To: Supervising Occupational Therapist (OTR) and/or Special Education Director/Supervisor
Contract: 183 days (typically follows the school calendar)
Summary:
The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides occupational therapy services to students with disabilities within a public school setting under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OTR). The COTA implements individualized treatment plans to help students develop the skills necessary to participate in educational activities and achieve their academic goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Treatment Implementation:
- Implements occupational therapy treatment plans developed by the OTR.
- Provides direct therapy services to students individually or in small groups.
- Utilizes a variety of therapeutic techniques and activities to address students needs in areas such as fine motor skills gross motor skills sensory processing visualmotor integration and activities of daily living (ADLs).
- Adapts activities and modifies equipment to meet individual student needs.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborates with the supervising OTR teachers parents and other school staff to ensure coordinated and effective service delivery.
- Communicates student progress and observations to the OTR.
- Participates in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as appropriate.
- Provides training and support to school staff on topics related to occupational therapy.
- Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Maintains accurate and timely records of student treatments progress and attendance.
- Documents student progress toward IEP goals and objectives.
- Completes required paperwork and reports as needed.
- Professional Development:
- Maintains current licensure and certification.
- Participates in continuing education activities to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
- Adheres to ethical and professional standards of practice.
Qualifications:
- Associates degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant from an accredited program.
- Current and valid certification as an Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA).
- Current and valid state licensure as required.
- Experience working with children with disabilities in an educational setting is preferred.
- Knowledge of special education laws and regulations (e.g. IDEA).
- Strong communication interpersonal and organizational skills.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to move and position students as needed.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment and materials.
- Ability to stand walk bend and stoop for extended periods.
Working Environment:
- School setting including classrooms therapy rooms and other school facilities.
- May involve travel between school sites within the district.

Additional Considerations for a 183Day Contract:
- The 183day contract typically aligns with the academic school year including student contact days teacher workdays and professional development days.
- The COTA may be expected to attend IEP meetings or complete other related tasks outside of student contact time.
- The contract may not include paid time off for holidays or school breaks beyond those designated in the school calendar.
