Job Description

TITLE: VARSITY HEAD COACH HIGH SCHOOL

DEPARTMENT: School

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must possess either an Arizona Department of Education issued Teaching Certificate (Athletic Coaching 712 OR a National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Level 1 Certification plus a valid Arizona specific NFHS First Aid Health and Safety certificate.
  2. Be well versed in the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) organization and its bylaws and requirements.
  3. Collegiate level playing experience in the associated sport is highly desirable with high school level playing experience expected as a minimum requirement.
  4. Previous successful coaching experience at the varsity level within the previous four years is highly preferred.
  5. Must possess excellent leadership skills.
  6. Possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card within fortyfive 45 days of employment.

JOB GOALS:

The High School Head Coach will be responsible for the planning organization and successful implementation of a comprehensive interscholastic athletic program and to carry out the objectives of the Districts High School athletic program. The High School Head Coach also carries overall responsibility for the Junior Varsity (JV) and Freshman level programs.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following tasks are essential for this position. This list is not inclusive of all responsibilities. Individuals may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed.

  1. Complies with all HIPAA and FERPA related confidentiality requirements.
  2. Develops positive relations with students parents school staff and the public including members of the media boosters officials players other coaches school administration and fans.
  3. Serves as a positive role model for students coaching staff and the community.
  4. Demonstrates knowledge of proven coaching theories strategies and techniques and works with student athletes of varying abilities socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds to effectively implement these attributes.
  5. Instills commitment discipline sportsmanship respect and teamwork to all athletes and coaching staff.
  6. Assumes responsibility for inventory selection and care of sports equipment and District facilities.
  7. Assumes responsibility for the supervision of all student athletes and other students under their care.
  8. Reports sports related injuries to Athletic Trainer and/or District administration in a timely manner.
  9. Builds and sustains a successful athletic program that is widely supported and respected by the District and community.
  10. Responsible for implementation and oversight of fund raising activities to provide support for athletic programs.
  11. Available for coaching duties during summers and vacation periods.
  12. Informs parents and student athletes regarding National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Clearinghouse registration deadlines and academic requirements etc.
  13. Encourages athletes to take PSAT SAT and ACT tests in order to prepare for college.
  14. Assists the Athletic Director in developing game schedules scheduling practices facilities use transportation needs and program budgets.
  15. Procures supplies materials and equipment as needed according to District policies and procedures.
  16. Provides game results to the media; maintains sports season and gamebygame statistics and records; provides statistical reports to the Athletic Director as requested.
  17. Provide statistical information video etc. to AIA and to college recruiters upon request.
  18. Submits data and requests for varsity letters and presents at awards banquet(s).
  19. Stays abreast of students academic performance and works with teachers and District administration to ensure continued student (sports program) eligibility.
  20. Adheres to District and AIA ethical guidelines and applicable Codes of Conduct.
  21. Adheres to requirements within the District Coaching Handbook.
  22. Assists the Athletic Director in the interview and selection process of other District coaches as requested.
  23. Applies discipline in a positive firm and consistent manner according to District School and Athletic Department policy.
  24. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE SKILL AND ABILITY:

Knowledge of:

  1. AIA rules policies and athletic department handbook.
  2. Effective coaching theories strategies and techniques appropriate for high school athletes.
  3. Federal and state laws rules and regulations governing education and sports program implementation.
  4. Budget preparation and management.
  5. Districts constituents (i.e. boosters etc.
  6. Supervision and evaluation of coaching staff.
  7. Developing and evaluating extracurricular programs.

Skill and Ability to:

  1. Supervise organize and motivate coaching staff at all levels.
  2. Motivate student athletes to participate and sustain their interests in the athletic program while excelling in instructional curriculum.
  3. Create beneficial relationships and communicate effectively with supervisors staff students vendors other coaches and community members.
  4. Apply leadership techniques.
  5. Implement educational policies and procedures.
  6. Supervise and evaluate coaching staff.
  7. Analyze and problem solve.
  8. Forecast trends; plan and implement goals.
  9. Develop and manage athletic program budgets as needed.

REPORTS TO: Athletic Director

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Athletic Director in accordance with Governing Board policy.

TERMS OF

EMPLOYMENT: Specific Season (Fall/Winter/Spring)

SALARY: Salary for this position is via annual stipend and is set according to the ExtraCurricular Salary Schedule approved by the Governing Board.
