Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Long Term Substitute Alternative Education Teacher (Middle School Math). This position begins around May 5 2025 for the remainder of the school year. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Alternative Education Teacher substitute will coordinate the development of appropriate educational plans for those students who meet program criteria and are in need of intensive intervention to obtain an appropriate education. The Alternative Education Teacher will be assigned a limited caseload to enable the teacher to closely monitor student behavior progress adjust and adapt curriculum and manage program and to allow for increased communication with parents/staff.TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year are in accordance with the current Master Contract and salary schedule. CLASSIFICATION: Fair Labor Standards Act ExemptREPORTS TO: Director of Special Education Building PrincipalEVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions in the current Master Agreement between the Colchester Education Association and the School Board. Evaluation will be completed according to the guidelines defined in the districts Differentiated Evaluation Process.SUPERVISES: Instructional Aides as assignedQUALIFICATIONS:1. Licensure as required by the Vermont Department of Education.2. Course concentration in behavioral management; advanced course work highly desirable.3. Excellent interpersonal organizational and problem solving skills.4. Demonstrated ability in team work and collaboration.5. Knowledge of the letter and spirit of Act 230 PL 94142 ADA Section 504 and other pertinent laws.6. Middle level math endorsement preferredPERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Follow referral procedures as defined in Special Education Handbook.2. Conduct comprehensive evaluations in a timely manner.3. Implement the following alternative educational/behavioral programming:
  • A. Specialized content area curricula with real life focus.
  • B. Adapted content area curricula to meet individual needs.
  • C. Prejob training and vocational opportunities or work study.
  • D. Alternative learning opportunities such as the G.E.D. or Community Based Training.
  • E. Individualized behavioral plans including contracts and checklists progress reports and data samples.
  • F. Techniques for therapeutic intervention crisis management and problem solving strategies.
  • G. Individual and/or group social skills curriculum. 4. Coordinate and assess special education programming as defined in the students IEPs. Communicate with other building staff and monitor student progress. 5. Consult with classroom teachers parents specialists and other resource agencies on the most effective alternative methods of instruction evaluation and behavioral management. 6. Attend all special education meetings as appropriate/required. 7. Perform necessary transition activities for all students on caseload. 8. Consult with guidance counselors job coach and administrators regarding program progress and future initiatives. 9. Develop implement and assess professional growth through the plan and process initiated by the SDE and managed by the Colchester Local Standards Board (CLSB).10. Accept other duties as assigned by building administrators and/or ISS Coordinator.
