QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters Degree or higher in Physical Therapy

Massachusetts State License as Physical Therapist

Exceptions to the above qualifications shall be made as the Superintendent deems appropriate and acceptable.

SUPERVISES: Certified Physical Therapy Assistants

JOB GOAL/PURPOSE: Identifies and provides supports to address a multitude of areas

including gross motor and developmental motor skills ambulation gait training wheelchair mobility and positioning needs that impact school participation transitions toward employment community integration and continued education.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal and/or Director of Special Education

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Addresses the needs of diverse learners in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
  2. Supports all students in accordance with the Massachusetts MultiTiered Systems
    of Supports
  3. Evaluates the students ability through a variety of functional behavioral and standardized assessments skilled observation checklists histories and interviews and provides a written report of testing results
  4. Participates in multidisciplinary meetings to review evaluation results integrate findings with other disciplines provide recommendations using a team approach and develops Individual Education Programs (IEPs)
  5. Provides targeted evidencebased therapeutic intervention to facilitate student participation and physical performance within the school environment as outlined in the students IEP
  6. Adapts and modifies the environment including use of equipment and training instructional staff to meet individual needs and to help students function as independently as possible.
  7. Educates student educational personnel and family to facilitate skills in areas of safe lifting positioning assisted ambulation gross motor programs and/or equipment use as well as health maintenance and safety
  8. Documents physical therapy services to ensure accountability of service provision and to meet standards for reimbursement of services as appropriate including
    Medicaid billing.
  9. Monitors and reassess the effects of physical therapy intervention and the need to continue modify or discontinue intervention. Provides written reports of progress for all students with each report card. Participates in annual reviews of each students IEP
  10. Adapts the environments to facilitate student access and participation in the
    educational programs
  11. Supports the safe transportation of students
  12. Refers students to other related service personnel and to healthcare providers
    as appropriate
  13. Serves as a liaison among educational team school medical personnel and medical equipment vendors
  14. Assists students in preparing for successful transition into appropriate posthigh school employment independent living and/or further education
  15. Uses professional literature evidence based research and continuing education to ensure practice is consistent with best practice
  16. Adheres to the professional Code of Ethics and standards of practice to guide ethical decision making in practice
  17. Performs other responsibilities as deemed appropriate and assigned by a supervisor and/or designee
