Program Description: This indistrict elementary K4 program is designed for students with significant learning developmental and cognitive needs that impede progress in academic and functional areas. The Developmental Learning Center provides a highly structured and routinebased learning environment with a high stafftostudent ratio. Instruction is highly individualized incorporating a modified curriculum and evidencebased instructional practices to ensure access to the general curriculum.A key component of the program is a systematic approach to repeated practice through specially designed instruction fostering the development of perceptual motor communication academic social daily living and selfhelp skills. For students with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) needs the program integrates individualized communication systems including lowtech and hightech AAC supports to enhance expressive and receptive language development. Staff receive training in AAC implementation to ensure students can effectively use their communication tools across settings.Students are explicitly taught compensatory strategies and supported in generalizing their skills throughout the school environment. As appropriate students have opportunities to participate in the least restrictive environment throughout the school day with AAC strategies embedded to promote meaningful engagement and interaction with peers and staff.
