Purpose of Position
This is a parttime nonbenefited position. Only UND students are eligible to be hired in this position.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Staff management:
- The Dakota Student EditorinChief has the final say over the employment of all editorial employees including subordinate reporting editors reporters photographers and graphic designers.
- The EIC also supervises the Dakota Student Delivery Driver and may also be required to hire writers and photographers.
- The EditorinChief is responsible for identifying and coordinating staff development opportunities which may include regional or national workshops and/or hosting of workshops focused on Dakota Student operations.
- The EIC is responsible for providing onboarding information and training for Dakota Student staff to include Dakota Student operating procedures and staff expectations.
- The EIC is also responsible for providing ongoing communication and feedback for Dakota Student staff.
- Content management:
- The Dakota Student EditorinChief collaborates with section editors reporters and photographers to generate content for The Dakota Student in all its formats: print publication online publication and social media.
- Approval of all editorial content belongs to the Editorinchief.
- Layout/Design:
- The Dakota Student EditorinChief has final creative say over the overall layout and design of the print publication website and social media pages.
- Production management:
- The Dakota Student EditorinChief manages production sessions throughout the academic year.
- They are responsible for coordinating with section editors to design and layout editorial content in creative appealing and readable ways.
- Administrative roles:
- The Dakota Student EditorinChief acts as the main point of contact for the publication.
- The EIC is expected to interact with the public in The Dakota Students best interest and may be requested by UND officials and representatives to serve as a student representative on various committees.
Required Competencies
- Knowledge of Associated Press style
Understanding the priority of news
Ability to identify potential article ideas
Knowledge of communication law (ie. Libel plagiarism)
Ability to work under strict deadlines/pressure
Minimum Requirements
- Strong leadership qualities including an ability to delegate appropriate tasks
Good organizational/time management skills
Prior management experience
Prior newspaper/publication experience
Google applications and Adobe Creative Suite experience - Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
