What Does the Addictions Prevention Team Do
The Addictions Prevention program within the Behavioral Health Division is tasked with the development of a strategic plan that will reduce the prevalence of substance use and problem gambling disorders in our community. We do this by creating messaging and programming that will reduce risk factors and bolster protective factors for all of our county residents. This internship will be housed within a team that is working to empower youth to change the narrative of substances within our community as well as develop prevention messages that will be accessible for the diverse community of Multnomah County.
Internship Description & Responsibilities:
Support our youthled prevention initiatives by facilitating youth coalition meetings taking notes and supporting youth in completing individual tasks.
Working with local prevention providers and culturally specific organizations to expand current problem gambling and substance use campaign messaging for target audiences.
Coordinate the Big Village Coalition in the future development of their KEEP IT SAFE messaging that will reach a more diverse audience through an array of media options (social media print newsletters etc).
Participate in general outreach events and research opportunities for community event engagement.
Explore behavioral health prevention and postvention through shadowing team members.
Learning Outcomes:
A broad understanding of primary prevention and the intersection between behavioral health and public health strategies.
Skills to build coalitions across communities and organizations.
Evidencebased strategies in youth engagement.
Knowledge of evidence based and culturally responsive primary prevention strategies along with multiple course certificates.
Experience in meeting facilitation media and messaging development and public speaking.
Education and Minimum Qualifications:
The ability to speak Spanish or having lived experience from Black/African American/African Refugee/Latino/a/x communities is a preference.
Candidates should have completed or enrolled in a college/university academic institution.
