Job Description
The Global Real Estate and Facilities (GREF) Tech team part of Finance Automation develops services products and tools to enable Amazons corporate real estate team to build and operate the companys global facilities in more than 60 countries which is the largest corporate real estate footprint in the world. We develop building systems that deliver a seamless adaptive and creative workspace experience to more than half a million employees. Our mission is to create technology that simplifies the processes Amazon employs to manage its corporate real estate. Our teams build services and products that support various GREF domains including space and occupancy planning design and construction employee health and safety sustainability and building management systems requiring IoT expertise. We are seeking a seasoned Systems Development Manager who can help us invent the next generation of real estate systems and support the GREF organization. The ideal candidate for this role will be a selfstarter and is comfortable with ambiguity. Building highly scalable solutions would be the basis of their work. They will enjoy learning inventing and implementing new technologies. A Systems Development Manager at Amazon works on real complex systems at a global scale owns their systems end to end and influences the direction of our technology that impacts hundreds of thousands of Amazon employees around the world. The main area of activity for this role is to lead the development and integration of intelligent systems that will become the nervous system of the largest corporate building fleet globally. The North Star for this team is to establish standards for the operational technology stack in GREF buildings and deploy it so that Amazon gains better controllership over the environmental conditions of their buildings utilization modes of spaces offered to users and the consumption of energy and utility billing which contribute to Amazons Climate Pledge.
Key job responsibilities
As a Systems Development Manager in GREF Tech you are responsible for the design architecture development and operational management of enterprise scale multitiered systems platforms or services. You will lead the definition and implementation of engineering best practices and using data to continuously improve operational best practices.
* Lead a team of highly talented Dev Ops & Sys Dev engineers responsible for managing all aspects of missioncritical systems.
* Lead and manage the team that drives organizational standards for operational excellence and resiliency.
* Establish strong relationships with internal partners and peer stakeholders to understand and meet their needs while operating existing systems at a high quality.
* Participate in incident management to resolve outages and communicate with a global audience and participate in calls resolving outage.
* Develop and maintain a culture of innovation and operational efficiency in the team.
* Manage the design and development of new software solutions supporting our internal teams including code reviews testing deployment and postlaunch monitoring.
* Hiring growing and retaining engineering team keeping up with the high Amazon bar. This leader will be responsible for continuing to build an extremely high caliber team.
A Bachelors degree in Computer Science Engineering Mathematics or a related field or five or more years of work experience in System development as an equivalent.
5 or more years of people management experience leading System development teams.
Proficiency in one or more generalpurpose programming languages such as Java C/C C# Objective C Python JavaScript Ruby and Go.
Experience designing building and operating largescale distributed systems or web services.
Experience in managing large scale infrastructure and automation.
Experience engaging and influencing senior executives using both verbal and written communication tools.
Expertise in operational excellence security compliance and distributed systems resiliency.
Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle including coding standards code reviews source control management build processes testing and operations.
Experience developing in Python for similar modern programming language such as C Java C# or Ruby.
Expertise in operations of highly available and scalable internet systems with large customer base.
Experience managing staff and meetings across multiple sites and time zones.
Excellent communication abilities both verbal and written including longform business writing on complex topics.
Ability to drive effective teamwork collaboration and commitment.
Excellent analytical problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
Experience developing and improving operational documentation procedures and workflows.
Ability to credibly coordinate between technical teams peers and business stakeholders.
Ability to quickly learn and adopt new technologies.
Experience managing oncall support coverage escalation and critical issue management.
Experience in contributing to the definition and implementation of automation opportunities within an operations environment.
Experience in root cause analysis and error correction identifying changes to procedures and systems to implement long term fixes and avoid repeating issues.
