Job Description

Job Summary

Under general supervision to perform journeylevel plumbing work in the installation alteration maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems; perform maintenance and repair on heating systems and related equipment; and to perform related duties as required

Examples of Duties

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks routinely performed in this classification.

  • Install repair and replace ferrous and nonferrous metal pipe including black iron galvanized iron cast iron ductile iron asbestos concrete pipe transite copper and brass also PVC PE ABS plastic pipe clay pipe orangeberg pipe and their appropriate fittings used in plumbing systems according to local State Federal standards specifications and codes. E
  • Install repair and replace materials using current and recognized methods for joining materials such as welding and cutting with oxygen and acetylene equipment brazing and soldering with appropriate torches cutting and fitting with pipe and tubing cutters snap cutters power threaders solvent welding nohub banding caulk and lead pipe joints. E
  • Install repair and replace carriers and hangers and set fixtures such as water closets urinals sinks lavatories tubs showers (including gang showers) basins pans floor sinks drinking fountains garbage disposals; install with appropriate piping valves faucets flush valves and necessary equipment etc. E
  • Install repair and replace potable hot water heating equipment such as water heaters boiler packs storage tanks and related equipment circulating pumps safety relief valves temperature control valves piping and checks. E
  • Install repair replace test and certify backflow prevention devices such as reduce pressure principle detector checks double checks pressure and nonpressure vacuum breakers; recognize and maintain appropriate air gap and air breaks on indirect systems. E
  • Install repair and replace fire protection pipelines post indicator valves flow indicators fire sprinkler heads and support equipment. E
  • Clean out fixtures drains and sewer systems using a variety of equipment such as hand augers power drain and sewer machines. E
  • Install repair and replace swimming pool piping valves and support equipment. E
  • Use a variety of specialized camera and electronic equipment for locating pipes leak detection backflow test gauges pressure gauges milivolt and volt testers. E
  • Operate trencher and backhoe to dig trenches; operate a jackhammer and concrete/asphalt saw and use a variety of hand tools such as picks and shovels; as needed install shoring and ensure shoring meets safety standards and requirements.E
  • Direct the work of assigned maintenance personnel. E
  • Plan and lay out work for assigned tasks from sketches drawings and blueprints. E
  • Estimate materials for assigned jobs order and buy materials from District warehouse or vendors. E
  • Operate a District vehicle; may pull a trailer as needed. E

Employment Standards

Knowledge of:

Proper methods materials tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
Applicable plumbing codes and regulations including the Uniform Plumbing Code.
Shop math applicable to the plumbing trade.
Record keeping techniques.
Lead abatement.
Confined spaces.
Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:

Perform skilled plumbing work.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Work from diagrams blueprints plans and specifications.
Plan and lay out plumbing work including estimating labor and material for the task assigned.
Perform shop mathematics.

Diagnose malfunctions and determine repair needs.
Maintain service and repair records.
Use the tools equipment and materials in the plumbing trade with skill including power tools such as power drain cleaning machines.
Maintain tools and equipment used and assigned in clean working order providing proper security.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.

Education and Training:

Equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by completion of a recognized fouryear plumbing apprenticeship program or possession of a valid journeylevel plumbing certificate or license issued from an authorized agency.

OR

Experience:

Four years of journeylevel experience in plumbing installation alterations and repair work.

Any other combination of training and/or experience which demonstrates that the applicant possesses the required skills knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Special Requirements

Valid Class C drivers license.

An applicant for this class will be required to obtain at his/her own expense and submit his/her motor vehicle driving record at the time of appointment. The record must meet and be maintained at the districts safe driving record standards. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the disqualification and/or rejection of the eligible regardless of any other standing.

A Backflow Testers License Issued by the Los Angeles County Health Department must be obtained by completion of the probationary period.

A Certificate issued by P.I.P.E. and a Los Angeles County Certificate showing acceptance by the State Fire Marshal in Fire Suppression Systems are desired.

Incumbents are subject to pertinent provisions of the General Industry Safety Orders of the California Code of Regulations regarding protective equipment when exposed to hazardous materials including but not limited to asbestos and lead. Incumbents in this class are required to wear protective clothing gear and equipment as required by law and provided by the District.
