Lifeguard

The City of Danbury is now hiring Lifeguards for the Summer 2025 Season.

Lifeguards ensure the safety and welfare of all guests and patrons while providing courteous friendly and professional assistance at Candlewood Lake. This position operates Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. We have fulltime and parttime positions available.

Key requirements for a lake lifeguard:

• Swimming ability:
  • Complete a longdistance swim (usually 500 yards) using front crawl or breaststroke.
  • Tread water for a specified duration (typically 2 minutes) using legs only.
  • Surface dive to retrieve a weight from a set depth.
• Rescue skills:
  • Demonstrate competency in various water rescue techniques including reaching throwing and active rescues.
  • Ability to perform underwater searches if necessary.
• First Aid and CPR:
  • Current certification in CPR and first aid including the ability to use an AED.
• Physical fitness:
  • Adequate stamina and strength to perform rescues in open water
• Knowledge of the environment:
  • Understanding of lake currents hazards and weather conditions
• Certification:
  • Pass a recognized waterfront lifeguard certification course from an organization like the American Red Cross or USLA.

Important considerations for lake lifeguarding:

• Weather conditions:Be prepared to monitor and respond to changing weather patterns which can affect water safety.
• Watercraft awareness:Understand how to manage potential conflicts with boats and other watercraft.
• Visibility limitations:Be aware of potential challenges with visibility in murky water.

Position Requirements:

Must be at least 16 years old to apply.

Must be Lifeguard certified with the American Red Cross or American Lifeguard Association.
