Position Summary:

Keep MIUs campus rolling smoothly by providing expert bike repair services at the MIU Bike Shop. Bicycles are a common mode of transportation for our campus community and as a Bike Repair Shop Attendant youll play a crucial role in ensuring their reliability and safety by resolving mechanical issues and providing maintenance checks.

  • Handson experience in performing a wide range of bicycle repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Opportunity to develop diagnostic skills and recommend appropriate repair solutions to customers.
  • Exposure to inventory management and organization in a bike shop setting.
  • Enhancement of mechanical aptitude and proficiency in bicycle repair techniques.



Job Responsibilities:

  1. Perform bicycle repairs and maintenance tasks including but not limited to:adjusting gears and brakes replacing worn components (e.g. tires tubes chains) truing wheels and lubricating moving parts.
  2. Diagnose mechanical issues and recommendappropriate repairsor replacements to customers (MIU students staff faculty etc.
  3. Coordinate appointments and scheduling for bike repairs ensuring efficient use of shop resources and timely service delivery with excellent customer care.
  4. Assistwith inventory management tasks and conducting periodic inventory counts.
  5. Maintain a clean and organized repair shop environment including cleaning workbenches tools and equipment.

Job Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in a bike repair shop or similar environment is preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude andproficiencyin bicycle repair and maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of bicycle components tools and equipment as well as familiarity with different types of bikes (e.g. road bikes mountain bikes hybrids).
  • Detailoriented with good organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently with some supervision.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift and move bicycles and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Mark Stimson began his teaching career as an instructor in a homeschooling program in which he and his coteachers developed novel learning methods in a supportive communitybased educational environment. He continued his career as an instructor in MIUs Department of Sustainable Living where he continued and extended learningbydoing pedagogy. He served for several years as MIUs Sustainability Coordinatordevelopingand implementing energy efficiency measures and other best practices.

After completing two MA degrees Stimson joined the doctoral program at GCAS (Global Center for Advanced Studies) Dublin and earned a PhD in Social and Political Thought.He is dedicated to promoting progressive pedagogy to create and promote more meaningful and transformative student learning experiences.
