Summary: The NMSU Police Department strives to provide an environment free of crime to enhance the educational process at the university. The members of the Department are committed to the protection of the lives rights and property of all citizens; the vigorous apprehension of criminals; the creation of new and innovative programs; and effective dialogue with the members of the public. Classification Summary:
General Duties: Provide high level security services at special events while under the authority of the NMSU Police Department. Responsible for monitoring for and identification of illegal and/or dangerous situations. Provides crowd management access and traffic control alcohol server support and emergency response. Supervision Received: Works under general supervision of the Security Supervisor and/or Police Officers Supervision Exercised: Provides guidance and leadership to new Security Officers.

Classification Standard Duties:
Provides a uniformed presence to protect property and maintain a high visibility presence to deter illegal activity. Communicate directly with law enforcement officials as well as the public. Warn persons of rule infractions or violations and apprehend or evict violators from premises using force when necessary. Monitor and authorize entrance of employees visitors and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises. Write reports such as equipment or property damage theft presence of unauthorized persons or unusual occurrences. Operate detecting devices to screen individuals and prevent passage of prohibited articles into restricted areas. Assist with emergency evacuations of facilities. Conduct protective sweeps of assigned areas. Provide traffic control and crowd management in emergency and nonemergency situations. Ensures laws and regulations for alcohol service are being followed. Provide first aid and CPR until emergency personnel arrive. Detain criminal suspects by using restraints and control devices. Use authorized force options to defend self or others. Provide conflict resolution. Performs miscellaneous jobrelated duties as assigned.

Required Education Experience Certification/License Equivalency
Required Education:High School diploma or GED; Required Experience:100 hours as Security Officer I; Equivalency:None; Required Certification/License:Must pass a criminal history background and fingerprint check. A valid New Mexico drivers license will be required. May also be required to complete psychological and drug screen exams. Must be at least 18 years old.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of relevant equipment policies procedures laws regulations and strategies to promote effective local state or national security operations for the protection of people data property and institutions. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words rules of composition and grammar. Knowledge of laws legal codes court procedures precedents government regulations executive orders agency rules.; Skilled in communicating effectively to include giving full attention to what other people are saying taking time to understand the points being made asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Being aware of others reactions and understanding why they react as they do. Talking to others to convey information effectively. Communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand. The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand. Using sound judgment and decision making to include logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions conclusions or approaches to problems. Adjusting actions in relation to others The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events). The ability to see near and far as well as hear in a crowded or noisy environment. The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense. Ability to safely operate a variety of motor vehicles under normal and high congestion traffic. Ability to use issued equipment including radios computers force options and traffic control equipment. Ability to lift 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques. Ability to stand for long periods of time in all types of weather. Ability to work varying hours both day and night.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
Temporary security are assigned to work NMSU special events such as sports concerts and campus activities that require security presence. They assist in setting up and conducting bag searches at entrances; alcohol monitoring at events; assisting police officers with ingress/egress of cars in the parking lots; assist with escorts; event control over watch; cash room security and assist police officer with traffic control at crash sites; and crowd control. Please refer to the below clarification regarding required education experience certification/license and/or equivalency.

Required Education: High School diploma or GED (All Positions)
Required Experience:
(Security Level One) No previous experience required for entry level
(Security Level Two) 100 hrs. required as a Security Level One
(Security Level Three) This is an armed position and requires both firearms/defensive tactics training from the department with yearly qualifications
Equivalency: None
Required Certifications/License:
Must be 18 years old
For all security positions applicants must pass a criminal history background and fingerprint check
For Security Level Three (armed position) applicants will be required to complete psychological and drug screen exams

Special Requirements of the Position
This is a parttime temp position. This is a temporary appointment with a predetermined end date not to exceed 1 year and is subject to an earlier termination if necessary. Temporary employees have no entitlement or expectation of continued employment during or beyond the appointment period.
