Job Description

The Hendrix College Chemistry Department is seeking a fulltime 12month department member to serve as laboratory coordinator and curriculum development specialist. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. A minimum of a masters degree in chemistry chemical education or related field with relevant experience teaching undergraduate chemistry laboratories and proficiency operating standard laboratory equipment is required.
The main responsibilities of this position include: teaching three to five laboratory sections per semester with a primary focus on teaching general and organic chemistry labs collaborating with faculty to design and refine syllabi for laboratory courses developing new experiments or enhancing the effectiveness of existing ones preparing and running sample analyses for teaching laboratories using instrumental methods such as NMR IC AA and GCMS managing maintenance of equipment (i.e. NMR cryogen fills) for teaching labs hiring training and supervising student laboratory assistants and supporting summer research programs through purchasing and maintenance of equipment.
This position will also serve as the departments chemical safety officer. The chemical safety officer is responsible for monitoring the collection of hazardous or chemical waste performing periodic testing of safety equipment ensuring compliance with federal state and local regulations serving as an emergency coordinator for hazardous material spills and accidents and developing and implementing student safety training for the teaching and research laboratories.
Preferred experience and skills include proficiency operating standard laboratory equipment and knowledge and understanding of standard chemical waste handling and safety requirements. Additional desired characteristics and skills include a demonstrated interest in chemical education with a focus on the development of engaging experiments and lab courses effective communication collaboration and organizational skills and proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
Additional responsibilities may also include maintenance and servicing of chemical instrumentation coordinating chemical waste disposal with relevant departments and annually reviewing and editing OSHA campus chemical compliance plans.
