Job Description

The Position

Current vacancy is a temporary nonbenefited position. The list developed from this recruitment will be used for a limited period to send selected applicants to a law enforcement academy.Female applicants encouraged to apply.

The current recruitment is to openly recruit for an individual to send through the law enforcement academy for future appointment as a Deputy SheriffCoroner. If selected you would be paid while attending the academy. The individual selected as Deputy SheriffCoroner In Training must successfully complete the academy. This temporary position ends at either the successful or unsuccessful completion of the academy. In order to be eligible to be hired as a Deputy SheriffCoroner after completion of the academy it is the responsibility of the trainee to complete the mandatory application process.

In nonsworn status attends a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T. approved Basic Academy and successfully completes the Academys course of study to acquire peace officer status in the State of California; and in a nonsworn capacity perform related duties as required.

Job Requirements and Minimum Qualifications

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Attends classroom and physical agility training at a California P.O.S.T. certified basic police academy.
  • Participates in classroom work and independent study while attending a police academy.
  • Learns the various laws of arrest search and seizure (P.C. 832 and acquires skill and proficiency in the use of approved firearms.
  • Acquires a basic knowledge of the penal code and police powers; learns to apply various penal code sections to simulated situations.
  • Performs a variety of physical exercises in preparation for the physical demands placed on a sworn peace officer.
  • Complies with the rules regulations and policies imposed on trainees by the academy; fulfills requirements and standards of attendance academic and physical performance.
  • Performs related duties tasks and assignments as required by academy staff and the Mendocino County Sheriffs Office.
  • Attends required training or other meetings as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of related education training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must successfully pass criminal history and other background checks. Must not be prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Drivers License

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Basic knowledge of current law enforcement policies practices and methods.
  • Applicable state federal and local ordinances laws rules and regulations.
  • All computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions of the job.
  • Record keeping report preparation filing methods and records management techniques.
  • Basic spelling punctuation and grammar as well as arithmetic concepts typical of that derived from basic coursework in these subjects at the high school level.
Skill in:
  • Using tact discretion initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports correspondence and other written materials.
  • Organizing work setting priorities meeting deadlines and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
  • Applying logical thinking to solve problems or accomplish tasks.
  • Understand interpret and communicate complicated policies procedures and protocols.
  • Communicating clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
Mental and Physical Abilities:
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Analyze situations identify potential problems and risks or respond with an appropriate responsible and effective course of action.
  • Demonstrate an acceptable level of skill and proficiency in the use of firearms.
  • Compose clear and concise reports and correspondence.
  • Type text using a computer at a speed necessary for successful job performance.
  • Comprehend and retain factual information pertaining to policies rules regulations and laws and accurately apply what is learned;
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Meet the physical requirements of a Basic Peace Officer Standard Training (P.O.S.T. academy.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand walk run and sit; reach with hands and arms; use manual dexterity to operate machinery/tools; handle seize hold or otherwise work with hands; climb jump or balance; stoop kneel crouch or crawl; speak and hear; use shape sound odor and color perception and discrimination; and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

Selection Procedure & Other Important Information

Deputy Sheriff Trainees attend a basic law enforcement academy taking courses such as criminal law search and seizure evidence investigative techniques patrol procedures firearms driver training defensive tactics and more.


Written testing for qualified applicants is currently scheduled for May.
