Description

In the fall of 2022 Mayor Marty Small Sr. launched an initiative to create a performance measurement system in Atlantic City modeled after a successful practice by municipalities around the country called CitiStat. ACs program is responsible for improving the quality of services provided to city residents. To accomplish that goal the system evaluates policies by collecting and examining performance data for various city agencies. Each month those departments present their data to the Mayors top staff. Agencies must be prepared to answer any question raised during the session

Intern Assignment Description: You will get the opportunity to help implement this evolving program. Your main responsibilities will be to:

1 Produce memorandums for the Mayors top staff after analyzing monthly data for city departments.

2 Followup with city departments on action items developed through the meetings.

3 Refine key performance indicators and data entry procedures with city departments.

4 Cocreate a quicklook dashboard with IT staff to track changes in the data.

Examples of Duties

The right candidate(s) selected for this unique internship will have the advantage of working closely with senior municipal leadership including department directors the city business administrator and the office of the mayor. The experience from this internship would not only allow for the development of skills for future career advancement with the city of Atlantic City but valuable skills that could be transferred to any local or other governmental agency.

Additionally interns can expect mentorship opportunities to support their professional growth. Intern interactions with senior municipal leadership from all department including the business managers office and mayors office will be both frequent and with direct access.

Finally interns can expect training and professional development opportunities to prepare them for the role. The City of Atlantic City sees internship opportunities as an investment in the growth and skills for future leadership and we welcome those seeking a career in public service.

Typical Qualifications

You must possess:

1 Strong social skills to work with people in a variety of positions across the city.

2 Strong quantitative skills to analyze data

3 Strong writing skills to produce readable and substantive policy memos.

4 Strong project management skills to oversee an assignment with multiple moving parts and players.

5 Competence with Microsoft Word Excel and PowerPoint to analyze data and produce graphs and other visuals.

We are seeking two graduate students to work 1020 hours a week primarily from City Hall. Previous experience working in municipal government is preferred but not required.

Compensation: This internship is NonPaid.

Supplemental Information

  • Summer (MayAugust)
  • Fall (SeptemberDecember) and
  • Spring (MidJanuaryMay) can provide clarity for potential applicants.

Additionally there is a possibility of extending the internship for candidates seeking longerterm opportunities.
